%C% %H2%Numbering Paragraphs

%JR%There have been many suggestions regarding the numbering of
%JL%paragraphs - see 6.1.12, 6.1.20, 6.2.9 and 6.3.15. Here is another
which is perhaps worthy of consideration.

%H2%Before starting a Document -

%JL%Go to Options and set the `Decimal places' to zero. Next, go to
%JL%the Filer and <>EX the cli - X023B (PARA1.CLI). This will add two
narrow columns at the left of the first text column, C.

%JR%Start your text in Col C but put a full stop in Col B each time you
%JR%start a new paragraph. Don't do this before row 3. When the text
%JL%is finished, make a note of the number of the last row. Now you
can put the para numbers in.

%JL%If you want the numbering to start at a certain number then put one
%JR%less than that number in cell A1, using <>X, number and ENTER. You
%JL%can delete this number later. If you want to start numbering at 1
then leave cell A1 empty.

%JL%Go to the Filer and <>EX the second cli - X023C (PARA2.CLI). Col.
%JR%A will have sequential numbering added just before each of the full
stops, as you see here.

%JL%If you have more than 66 lines you need to bring this second cli
%JR%into another Pipedream instantiation and amend the figure `66' to
%JL%whatever your last line is. Save the cli (remember to save it as
`plain text'), <>KILL it in the Index and go back to your document.

%C%%H2%__________________

%JR%If you make changes and need to re-number then just try using <>A.
If this should fail <>EX the cli again.

%JL%If you have added or removed lines so that ALL of the full stops
%JR%are misplaced by the same number of lines you can correct by using
<>EDRC or <>EIRC at the very top of Col A. and Col B.

%C%%H2%___________________

%H2%For an existing document -

%JL%You can use this method with an existing text as I did here. Use
%JR%the first cli to put in the extra columns, put in the full stops
%JL%and <>EX the second cli. You may say that while you are putting in
%JR%the stops you might as well put in the numbers. Just so, but you
might make changes later that you will have to correct manually!

%C% %H2%_________________

%JR%With this method there is no need to hide columns or specify which
columns you wish to print, just print the whole document.
