ABOUT THIS CD-ROM

Welcome to the Visual Warehouse Version 2.1 for NT product!
This file is found in the root directory of the CD-ROM as:

    x:\README.TXT

where "x" represents your CD-ROM drive.

This CD-ROM contains the following directories:

o DISK1: The Visual Warehouse installation code. Refer to
the Planning and Installing manual before installing the
product. If you have an existing version already in-
stalled, use the Uninstall icon first, and reboot the
machine before you start installing a new version.
o SAMPLE: Source data and Visual Warehouse tag files to
reconstruct a datamart of a manufacturing company. See
the README.TXT file in this directory for installation
instructions. The VWDEMO.TXT file in the same directory
contains a description of the sample and a demonstration
    script.
o SAMPLE2: Source data and Visual Warehouse tag file to
reconstruct a datamart for the monitoring of the Visual
Warehouse operations. See the README.TXT file in that
directory for description and installation instructions.
o SAMPLE3: An example of post processing UDPs to perform
database maintenance on a business view. See the
README.TXT file in that directory for description and
    installation instructions.

Fixes to this CSD include:

1. A new DB2 alias added to a business view when the busi-
ness view is in either Test or Production Status is ap-
plied to the database when the business view is saved.
The same is true when a DB2 alias is removed.
2. When a user is created outside of a Group Notebook, the
    Default Security group is assigned.
3. Changes have been made to increase support for Sybase
10, MS SQLServer, and Informix data types.
4. Agent continues to execute when SQL warnings are re-
    ceived.
5. Problems with the copy of business view after nth copy
    has been fixed.
6. Problem with February Schedule error has been fixed.
7. Business view Notes size has been increased to 32K.
8. The operation windows show -1 when the number of bytes
    processed is not available.
9. Several cases of OLE automation error messages been
    fixed.
10. When the source of a business view is in the same data-
base as the target datamart (even if the business names
for source and target resources are different) a SELECT
    INSERT SQL statement is used.
11. A business view column formula can now be updated in
    Test Status.
12. The removal of a join statement is now reflected in the
    SQL panel.
13. There are numerous On-Line help updates.

The new features and functions included in this CSD include:

1. Improvement to the printing of business views, business
view list by datamart, business view tree list by
    datamart

Within each datamart the user can print individual busi-
ness views, the business view list, or a business view
tree. The results are brought up on the screen in
Notepad or a user specified editor.

The description of this function can be found in the on-
line help for business view list.
2. The business view trees now show the details of the se-
lected business view at the top of the screen. The sta-
tus is reflected in the color of the business view, and
all appropriate actions can be performed on a selected
    business view.

The description of this function can be found in the on-
line help for business view List.
3. A new security type has been added to allow a user to
demote a business view that has dependent business views
from Production to Test Status without demoting all of
the dependent business views. This security type is
called Business View Maintenance. This allows the user
to make changes to the SQL statement, Schedule, or add
columns to the table more easily.

The description of this function can be found in the on-
line help for privileges, business view status, and Ver-
    ify Demote.
4. A source table can be deleted from a business view in
Development or in Test Status under certain conditions.
Any columns and SQL dependencies will also be deleted.
The description of this function can be found in the on-
line help for business view status and business view
    status table.
5. A source table can be added to a business name in Test
Status. New columns can also be added in Test Status.

This allows new data to be added to a table without de-
leting old data. The creation of the new columns is
done from the status menu of the business view list.

The description of this function can be found in the on-
line help for Add source columns to an existing business
view, business view status, and business view status ta-
    ble.
6. The import of relational tables into Information Re-
source has been improved by allowing the user to
      - specify a table prefix to fetch the table list
      - optionally include system tables
      - select multiple tables to import
      - optionally specify replace of existing tables.

The description of this function can be found in the on-
line help for Catalog Import and Import.
7. The business name for agent site and target datamart
have been added to the Operation Work in Progress, WIP
    filter, and column selection windows.

The description of this function can be found in the on-
line help for Operations Work in Progress, WIP Column
    Selection, and WIP Filter.
8. The filter used in the Operations Work in Progress win-
dow is saved for the next time the window is invoked.

The description of this function can be found in the on-
    line help for WIP Filter.
9. The estimated row count of a business view in progress
is available in the Runtime Status Details window.

The description of this function can be found in the on-
line help for Runtime Status Details.
10. An external API has been added to allow other programs
    to invoke a business view.

The description of this function can be found in the
README.TXT file in the EXTTRIG directory on the CD-ROM.
11. Performance improvements include:
o Importing column definitions from relational
        sources.
o Operations load using a filter.
o Business view notebook open and close.

processor for the purpose of running Runstats, Reorgs
etc is provided in the SAMPLE3 directory of the CD-ROM
13. A new version of the Tag File Export and Import utili-
ties, which allow smaller granularity of export and pro-
vide other improvements. The old version (IWH2EXPT and
IWH2IMPT) are installed as well as the new versions
    (IWH2EXP2 and IWH2IMP2).

The description of the new Import/Export utilities can
be found in TAGPORT2.TXT, in the iwh\bin directory, af-
ter you have installed the product.

CSD UPGRADE

Upgrading the Visual Warehouse from V2.1 code will not de-
stroy the content of the control database. However, an up-
grade of the database will take place (new columns will be
added) when you run the initialization program at the end of
the install of the new version. Therefore, it is recommended
that you backup your control database before proceeding with
this upgrade.

When the Visual Warehouse is using more than one machine
(server, clients and agent sites) all the machines must be
upgraded at the same time. Clients, agents and server cannot
communicate with each other when they are at a different
level of code.

Host Adapter users: You must have the Host Adapter NT Client
available. You will need to reinstall the Host Adapter cli-
ent code after reinstalling the Visual Warehouse code.

1. Log on to the Visual Warehouse Server machine with the
same user id you used for the initial installation (gen-
erally the user id used by the Server to access the Vis-
    ual Warehouse control database).

2. Ensure that no user is using the Visual Warehouse client
    to access this control database.

3. Stop the Visual Warehouse services, using the Services
    icon of the Control Panel.

4. Back up your control database, either from a DB2 command
window or from the DB2 Database Director.

5. Uninstall the Visual Warehouse product using the
Uninstall icon in the Visual Warehouse group in Program
Manager. Select all the components for deletion and
    click OK.

6. Shutdown and restart the machine. If you re-install the
product without rebooting the system, the product will
    not re-install properly.

7. Insert the VW R2.1 - Refresh 3/97 CD in your CD-ROM
drive. (If your machine does not have a CD-ROM drive
and you use the Windows NT disk sharing capabilities,
make sure the shared device name is less than eight al-
    phanumeric characters long).

8. Run x:\DISK1\SETUP.EXE to reinstall the product (where x
is the drive letter for your CD-ROM). Follow the in-
structions on the screen. You should not recreate the
control tables by answering NO to the following two
    prompts:

o "You are about to recreate the RUNTIME CONTROL TA-
BLES on the Visual Warehouse server. These Tables
        already exist. (...)

Are you sure you want to do this?"
o "You are about to recreate the WAREHOUSE CONTROL TA-
BLES on the Visual Warehouse server. These Tables
        already exist. (...)

Are you sure you want to do this?"
If you decide to recreate the control tables and loose
all your definitions, you should create both the runtime
control tables and the warehouse control tables.

9. If the Host Adapter client was installed, re-install it.

Repeat the above operations on all clients and agent sites
connected to this server.

For more information, refer to the Planning and Installing
the Visual Warehouse Solution manual. This manual is avail-
able in PostScript format on the CD-ROM in the BOOKS direc-
tory as vwplan.ps.

---------------------------------------

MIGRATION FROM VERSION 1 (OS/2)

If you migrate from a Version 1 Visual Warehouse installa-
tion, read the following information before you proceed:

o ddlexprt.txt in the \OS2\ directory of the CD-ROM,
o Appendix C in the Planning and Installing the Visual
Warehouse Solution manual for information on migrating
    metadata from OS/2 to NT.

The stand-alone utility used to export metadata from OS/2 is
a modification of the original ddlutil, but the content of
the export function is very different. You cannot use
ddlutil in the OS/2 product(Version 1) for migration pur-
poses. The program that you should use is shipped with VW
(Version 2 for Windows NT). On the CD-ROM, you'll find a
directory called OS2. The program ddlexprt.exe can be found
in OS2\EXPORT\. In the same directory, you will also find a
text file that gives more details about what you need to ex-
port. You should generate two or more tag files from the
export, depending on what information you want to migrate.

The Version 2 Release 1 Planning and Installing the Visual
Warehouse Solution manual has a typo. In Appendix C, the
program name was shown as ddlexptr. It should be ddlexprt.
Also, the text in the section Running the export utility
should read "Do not use the Version 1 end user interface to
export your metadata if you want to import that metadata
into Version 2."

Because this export program generates tags that can be mi-
grated to Version 2 on Windows NT, it contains a lot more
information than the tag files generated by the ddlutil of
Version 1. You can still import the tag into DataGuide for
display purposes but you will see Visual Warehouse internal
objects that you might not be interested in, and that might
be confusing.

To import the TAG files into a Version 2 system, you run the
iwh2impt.exe program from the command line. This program
can be found in the IWH\BIN\ directory after you have in-
stalled the product. From this point on Appendix C of the
Planning and Installing the Visual Warehouse Solution manual
contains all the information you need to complete the mi-
gration.

---------------------------------------
NATIONAL LANGUAGE SUPPORT CONSIDERATIONS

Although this release of Visual Warehouse is not translated,
the data fields such as business view names, descriptions,
etc., can be entered using your local characters. If the de-
fault font is not convenient for displaying those charac-
ters, you can change the Visual Warehouse system font by
using the IWH2EFNT command. It is installed in the Visual
Warehouse run-time directory (usually \iwh\bin). From the
file manager, double click on this file or use the File >
Run menu. Select the appropriate font and font size.

------------------------
Importing Data source column definitions

For numeric and decimal sources the precision returned from
an import columns will be 2 digits off. Specifically, the
precision returned is the actual precision + 2. This means
that the precision of the target table decimal and numeric
columns will be 2 digits greater than their corresponding
source columns. For most users this will not create a prob-
lem. However, for users who convert their decimal/numeric
data to strings, this can cause problems. For example, com-
pany XYZ stores its dates as DEC(8,0), such as 19970219 for
February 19, 1997. Import columns will record this date as
DEC(10,0) in the metadata. A user wants to retrieve dates
and convert them into the format: 02-19-1997. To do this
they use a query that looks something like (C1 is the DEC(8)
column which contains the date):

 SELECT SUBSTR(CHAR(C1),5,2) CONCAT '-'
        CONCAT SUBSTR(CHAR(C1),7,2) CONCAT '-'
        CONCAT SUBSTR(CHAR(C1),1,4)
 FROM ...

Unfortunately, because the metadata defines the source pre-
cision as DEC(10), the result of this query for 19970219 is:
97-02-0019.

The solution to this problem is very simple: after import-
ing the source decimal/numeric column, manually change the
precision value to the correct precision (which, in this
case, is DEC(8,0)) in the column definition of the source
table you just imported, or in the business view definitions
using this column, when appropriate.

------------------------
LAN FILES CONSIDERATIONS

Business views can use flat files as their source. If the
flat file does not reside on the agent site, but is accessed
through a Windows NT file server, the user must ensure that:

1. A user id with its password authorized to access the re-
    mote file is available.

2. The agent site description used by the business view
    specifies that userid and password.

3. A .bat file performing the NET USE command is provided.
It should contain at least the following two lines:

        NET USE drive: /DELETE
NET USE drive: //hostname/sharedDrive password /USER:userid

The first line releases the drive letter if it is in
use. The second line establishes the connection. The
user id and password must be the same as those used in
    the agent site description.

4. The .bat file resides on the agent site machine and is
specified as a Pre-Access Command in the Connection page
of the Flat File Information Resource notebook.

A similar .bat file can be specified as a Post-Access
Command to delete the link after the processing of the
    files.

The access to the file may be restricted by the authori-
zation assigned to the NT user id used.

The requirements are similar if you want to use a LAN file
for a user defined program

------------------
NFS CONSIDERATIONS

Another way to access flat files from an agent site is to
use the Network File System (NFS) protocol of TCP/IP. When
using NFS, you must provide a user id on the NFS command
(NFS LINK if you use Maestro** from HummingBird**). Simi-
larly to accessing LAN flat files, the access commands must
appear as a Pre-Access Command in the Connection page of the
Information Resource notebook.

Note that if the NFS code itself is not installed on the
agent site, you must use NET USE to access it, in the same
way described above in the "LAN Files Considerations" sec-
tion.

----------------------
SECURITY CONSIDERATIONS

To look at the definition of a business view, a user must
belong to a group which has access to both the target ware-
house and the information resource. If this is not the
case, some parts of the business view definition will not be
accessible.
