     RE: 1000rlx (Re: Msg 22232)

 Hi, Mark,

 Thanks for the note.

Yeah, the multiple config thing is neat. I have a 1400 HD, also
and at one point I had six different boot options set up...
I'm down to only two, now, since I got the 1000RLX. The extra
"power" [if I can say that about a 286 :-) ] took enough heat
off the old 1400, that I cut back to only two configs; "plain
and normal" on each machine. I use the 1400 for com stuff and a
few other things...it's a good thing, too, 'cause I just bunged
up the 1000 pretty good. (see earlier post)

What's neat, is that each config option can call a different
autoexec.bat (by different names, of course), so that you can
set different paths, start-up options, etc, etc. with each of
a maximum of 9 possible boots. I had a "normal" option, a plain
boot, a boot that loaded GeoWorks at start-up, a game boot,
a seperate boot that loaded SuperKey resident and an Aladdin
boot that was necessary for GEnie's ever unpredictable front-end.

Now all I need is a "boot" in the butt to remind me not to try
to get so "creative" with the ROM DOS on the 1000RLX!

 Welcome home...

Re: HIDOS...

Went over your Config.sys there. The main different between what you
sent me, and the configuration I have here is that I don't have the HIDOS
instruction in the CONFIG.SYS file, but rather in the DCONFIG.SYS which
resides where the large .SWP file is. That is also where the DEVICE=C:\
SSTORDRV.SYS instruction is. So, the DCONFIG.SYS on the Physical drives
reads:

   ?Load MemoryMAX software (Y/N) "DEVICE=HIDOS.SYS /GATEA20=PS2 /B=AUTO"
   HIDOS=ON
   DEVICE=c:\SSTORDRV.SYS
   DEVICE=C:\DEVSWAP.COM
   CHAIN=C:\CONFIG.SYS

which then chains to the rest of the instructions on the Virtual drive,
assuming I have those terms right. :).

Dunno if you use the Dconfig there, since your Superstor might be a
bit different from here, but the instructions above do get that kernal
loaded high.

It's also possible that our systems are configured a bit different.
Dairylady mentioned a SETUPRLX /A option, which shows a detailed
configuration of the system, so it might be a good idea to compare those.
Haven't run that yet....so dunno if it has anything about that PS2 switch
or not.

Hope you got your ROM/BOOT problem fixed. That was a pretty good one, but
I would think there would be a way to override the automatic Rom boot,
but I didn't know what it was. :).

 Mark,

Well, I couldn't get the /a option to do anything, either...

SuperStor 2.0 (the commercial version) doesn't use the DCONFIG.SYS
set up. It does load a copy of C:\config.sys on the physical drive,
like dconfig.sys. SSTOR 2 has an "update" utility that makes sure
that everything is there on the physical drive at boot, similar to
what dconfig.sys does, only it doesn't chain, per se, I think...

Anyway, the commands to load high are on the physical drive, as well
as on the c: drive (that's "c", after swapping...). The syntax looks
OK, as far as I can tell, so, I dunno...looks like it's either my
1000RLX is different, or maybe the SSTOR 2.0 or DRDOS version is
 just enough different, or...???

Say, what date DRDOS 6 do you have? I can't remember if I installed
the 4/92 upgrade, or not, since it looked mostly to be Windoze-related.
 Maybe it's my version??

Solved the ROM boot problem the "direct" way. Couldn't wait to find a
more elegant solution, 'cause I had to get some database stuff done for
work, so I disconnected the hard drive, which forced the c'uter to boot
from the A drive, so I could run SETUPRLX from the Deskmate floppies.
Not often I get to solve problems I cause in software with a screwdriver,
but it did work out OK. I noticed there ain't much actually inside the
case...looks like there is room for another complete 1000RLX in there.
Now that would be something: instead of virtual 8086 machines, I could
have dual "physical 286" machines. That's even better than my current
 "multi tasking" set up (a 1400 HD and a 1000RLX side-by-side)!

Uh, oh, I'm babbling...see ya later

Re: The RLX

So, did you solve the Rom/Boot problem yet???

Having optional Boot configurations would be rather ideal, especially
with DrDos since in normal use, have things like Disk Optimation implemented,
which reduces available memory. Have run into a few programs that need
more....

So, the sensible thing to do would be to have two configs...one with
Highest Speed at the expense of memory, and the other having highest
memory at the expense of Speed (like the options on the DrDos Setup
program), and this seemed to cover just about most circumstances I've
encountered so far.

Re: RLX....

My version of DrDos was purchased just about 2-3 months ago...do dunno
if there's a version/upgrade different from yours or not there. Seems
strange this doesn't work. If yours is over a year old, could well be
a version difference that is not acknowledging this parameter, but I
would think the Novell people would know that.

Seems that would be more likely than a RLX difference.

The SETUPRLX /A option suggested came from Dairylady, who said that when
it's run that way, you get a whole bunch more options, but when testing
it here, it gave the same results as without the A. I'm sure she'll reply to
that when she reads it here. (Hopefully, got that Syntax right???).

That, by the way, was quite a solution you found for the ROM/BOOT. Kind of
like pulling out the Heavy Artillery, huh??? As you indicated, sometimes
our little experiments do backfire, don't they?

So, have you concluded that you can't get the Deskmate Rom to boot under
DrDos? Was wondering about that, actually.

John Donovan used to say something to the effect that there are
no problems that cannot be solved by the application of significant

Re DRDOS 6.0 and Deskmate coexisting:

It can definitely be done. When I first got the 1000RLX, I immediately
formatted the HD (it had been doing store demos and who knows what might
have been on it), loaded DRDOS, and thereby got rid of Deskmate. Shortly
thereafter, I switched to the ROM boot and ran Deskmate from floppies
just to see what I was missing. Worked quite well. Not even all that slow
from floppies. I suspect that since the 1000 machines started life as
limited RAM boxes with only floppies, that Deskmate was probably developed
with "resource challenged" machines in mind...anyway, I admit to being
pleasantly suprised by DM. It does exactly what it is supposed to do very
well, says I. It happens that I don't require that particular set of
services, so it is not all that useful to me, but, hey, it doesn't
crash, it's pretty easy, and it works well on "little" machines. Big
advantages over Windoze, at least at home...eh?

The challenge is to get it to work with a SuperStored HD from the ROM chip.
Now that I know how to get out of the ROM Boot trap, I"m gonna try it.
Here's what I *think* will be required:
    1. Start from scratch with an un-SSTORed HD. My HD, of course, is pretty
full. I can't shrink the swap file enough to make room for the DM
files. So I'll have to start over (sigh).
    2. Load DM files (using the ROM boot and DM from floppies) to the
physical HD, just like Tandy intended.
    3. Change to "boot from disk". Load DRDOS per instructions, but without
SSTOR. Delete any MS-DOS files from HD.
    4. Install SSTOR 2.0 from DRDOS. Reserve, say, 5 megs on the physical
drive. Adjust config.sys to allow for enough virtual drives to
       allow for A-(floppy), B-(imaginary floppy), C-(physical drive),
       D-(SSTOR virtual drive), E-(Deskmate drive-called D, in stock config).
Potential problems? Well, all those virtual drives take up some precious
RAM, of course. Don't know exactly how all those drives will actually get
named by DRDOS, either. Could get a little confusing...Depending on what
one used DM for, 5 megs might not be enough, though you could tell DM to
store data files on the SSTOR drive, I think. Don't know for sure if DRDOS
and DM will sort themselves out, in terms of identifying the virtual drive
that the stock set up calls "D". This all might not work, at all. Finally,
it does seem like a lot of work for a program I prob'ly won't use much...

Hmmm...maybe I don't really want to do this.

 Wadda ya think?

Dave,

Generally, Tandys newer than the 1000 series have no software problems
and few, if any, `Tandy only' hardware requirements. My newest is a 1991
Tandy 4033LX (386DX/33Mhz) which requires Tandy memory boards (1 is included,
1 more is optional). They can hold up to 8 Meg each. I guess that means the
*motherboard itself* is Tandy specific, too, though having a serial,
parallel, and *#$%@# PS/2 style mouse port built in isn't so bad. ;)

The older 1000s required (and still do) many patches, fixes, tweaks and
workarounds and a place like this for their users to help each other out!
Lots of that Tandy specific stuff can be found in the Crossfire database in
the PC Sig.

Tandy is apparently selling its computer manufacturing divisions to AST
Research. Look back in this Forum for a thread which started about a week
ago and is under the subject `End of an era' (I think) for more information.
This probably won't adversely affect warranties and may even create some nice
sale prices on current models.

RE: Deskmate ...

Well, as far as Deskmate goes...for a program that you "don't use much",
sounds like getting to load it from ROM should be a minor consideration
instead of a major one, but I understand that sometimes it's the
challenge of doing that justifies the doing. :).

I also don't use Deskmate much, but currently have it implemented on
a Superstor Drive with just the Text and .SND functions. But I'm using
the DESK.EXE file to bring it up, which is basically just as quick as
the ROM load was, so from my point of view, the result doesn't justify
the risk of experimentation.

I suppose for someone who used Deskmate as a Main Menu program trying
to implement the ROM load would be a worthwhile adventure, or for
someone who didn't want to shell out the bucks to get the .EXE/Stand-alone
version. :).

From my point of view, it's a curiousity as to whether it will work
on the DrDos. Since the ROM is a D drive the initial
attempt to get it to work would be on an uncompressed Drive with DrDos,
with perhaps just a C and E drive implemented, if there's a partition
there.

Once a D drive is defined, that's when problems show up with accesing
the ROM, and implementing Superstor may create a D drive out of
what you start with.

A lot of this depends if you're converting to DrDos from a Dos 4.-
version, or a Dos 5.0 version, which messed up the Deskmate ROM to begin
with by creating a D drive. It was possible going from Dos 4.- to DrDos would
have left the Deskmate Rom just fine. Dunno.

 Mark,

Well, I can't see me buying the Deskmate EXE prog...
not 'cause it's not an interesting prog, just 'cause
I'm too cheap (broke!)...and you really hit it on the
 head: it's the challenge!

Still, my experiments have been put on hold for a bit.
I have a new tidbit relating to Tandy almost-compatibility:

I just got a backup program real cheap on sale. I thought
that for once I would be good and back up everything at once.
I opened a new case of preformatted diskettes and away I went.
After 39 diskettes-worth of boredom, I discovered that the
 diskettes were unreadable!

Suspect that the prog cannot quite deal with the diskette
controller, 'Cause it goes straight for the DMA thingy...
also, could be a problem with the preformatted diskettes
and DRDOS. The B/U prog supposedly formats and verifies
the diskettes during b/u, but it may be actually calling
the DRDOS quick format utility, which doesn't always get
along well with MS-DOS formatted diskettes. They often require
the full reformat to work OK (not a problem reading 'em, only
 writing to 'em).

So, I ended up doing a full DRDOS format on every diskette,
then turned off the "high speed" option on the B/U prog. All
is well, now. I finally have a complete b/u set. I *only*
had to handle all 39 diskettes 3 times to make it work...

Next time I'll experiment a little more before committing
to the whole nine yards...(sickly grin)

Sounds like what you needed there was a Diskette Caroussel that works
like a Jukebox to speed up your back up process there. (Actually, I'm
surprised a Disk Carousel isn't a popular item).

I've actually considered backing up the whole system, but it's probably
just as easy to back up the directories that you want on a few disks,
and that's pretty much what I've done. Have about 5-6 disks of essential
stuff....already configured programs and all, and so if the system goes
poof, can pretty much restory everything directory by directory without
too much fuss.

Curious...when you say that you were doing a "DRDOS Format" on these
flopppies, is that a compressed format? And isn't that basically the
same as a regular Dos Format, if it's not??? Sounds like the problem
was with the program that you were using, rather than any DrDos
incompability with preformatted Disks...but would think that could have
been tested pretty quickly in Hindsight, huh? :).

 Mark,

Well, what I meant about the format thing is that DRDOS will do
a "quick format" on diskettes that are already formatted. I
think it just looks at the FAT, and lets it go at that, or
something...I have found with Tandy boxes (my 1400 HD, for sure
and my 1000RLX sometimes) that there can be problems accessing those
diskettes later. I *think* it mostly is a problem if the diskettes
were originally formatted under MS-DOS. I also know there can be
problems if the PCTOOLs v6 FORMAT command is used. The Tandy can
have problems accessing such diskettes. It's an issue for me mostly
because I do a lot of database programming for my job at home. The
box at work is a Compaq with C-DOS 4.01 (arrrgh) and PCTOOLS 6.0.
In order to be sure that all is well, I format in DR-DOS with the
command "FORMAT A:/u/v: wich forces a full format and skips the
annoying (to me) "Volume Label" prompt. I didn't think about
that when I set up the backup prog to "format and verify" the
preformatted diskettes, and I suspect that is why I had problems
 with it.

Now the 1400 has some weird glitch in the BIOS that makes it deal
with the 720K A drive in a slightly non-standard fashion. DRDOS
has a real problem formatting on the drive, as does PCTOOLS FORMAT.
I discovered a utility on the CIS TRS80PRO forum called SETBPB35 that
fixes the problem and makes the A drive work like a "real" compatible.
OTOH, the controller on the 1000RLX is just enough "off" that the
backup prog cannot work in the "high speed" direct DMA access mode.
So each machine requires a different approach, though both are
allegedly IBM compatible...I wonder if AST knows what they're
 getting into <big grin>???

In a sick sorta way, this is all kinda fun. I sure have learned
a bunch about stuff I didn't think I cared about, thanks to my
 Tandy boxes!

The Setup Program that we're using now just displays the basic confuration
screen, of Com Ports, where to Boot from, whether to use a Mouse, High

all together, and certainly nothing close to the screens you described.

Played around with a few options, but haven't found one that works

Re: Dos 6.0

I sympathize with your loss of Deskmate there with Dos 6.0. Apparently,
you have the older RLX machine, like I have here. My brother had the
newer one (bought a month later), and it came with Dos 6.0 compatible
with Deskmate Rom. The guy said nothing to me when we purchased the machines
about the different versions of the machines, which PO'd me a bit, but
I don't think he was even aware of the difference.

My solution was to get the Desk.Exe, which was the easiest solution,
and use that now. A few people (and definately the minority), claim
to have gotten the Dos 6.0 to work with the the ROM, but unless this
is an imperative thing...might not be worth the effort.

Agree that a nice Shell program is essential. One of the best programs
I've found is called "STEREO SHELL", and highly recommend it. Puts up
two files lists side by side, and easy to copy from one side to the other,
for instance, to move files from Directory to Directory. Also makes
extracting and compressing files simple, once it's configured properly.

There are numerous other Shell programs, however, and it's trial and
error to find one you like. In the Dos/New Arrivals, they just posted
POWER MENU, for instance, and shall experiment with that eventually.
I've tried a lot of them. :).

Another Highly recommended program is QUIKMENU. Lets you set up buttons
to run programs with by clicking on the buttons. Also has a file manager,
calendar, screen saver, etc. This program will come highly recommended
by several people on PC/FORUM and can be found here as Shareware. This
is a worthwhile experience.

Also...one of the BEST Text Editors around is called "Visions", which
I think is posted under Word Processors. Menu driven, multi files,
and highly recommended by others also who have tried it. For simple
word Processing, however, that's fast and efficient, try Cedar Island
Editor...which is quick and neat, but doesn't print.

If you'd like to try any of these, but can't find 'em. Lemme know. I've
looked at lots of software programs, and these are some of the best I've
found, IMHO, although I'm sure others would have other recommendations.

Re: Formats...

Knocking on Wood here, have never had any problems with disk formats
under DrDos. Granted, I don't use PC-Tools and have never had Dos. 4.01,
which from your comment sounded like a good thing.

Also have a 1400 FD, (with 720K disks), and haven't noticed any problem
in swapping disks between systems either, not that that's done much.

Seems like the best thing to do is, whenever possible, just not look
for trouble. Buy a box of disks, format them under DrDos with a full
format, and everything is fine. :). I can understand that in your
situation of going from computer to computer, w/ and without things
like Pc/Tools, there's always the unexpected, so expect it. :).

As per your notation, problems are incredibly educational, aren't they?

     neopaint on a 286
     From: DBOULEY To: ALL

Has anybody here got any experience with Neopaint on a
 1000RLX (or similar 286)?

I'm giving it a try, and am having some problems with it...

It has a very hard time drawing circles and solids...unless I
move the mouse incredibly slowly, the prog will simply quit
making the object bigger, and leave it at some arbitrary size,
as though I had let go of the mouse button too soon...Frequently,
even if I do move the mouse very slowly, it will do it, anyway.

It acts as though the processor can't keep up with the arithmetic
of calcualting the object, or maybe it's the video that can't keep
up. All I know is EasyCAD doesn't have this kind of trouble drawing
even elipses (which are about as tough on the processor as anything).
In fact, EasyCAD on my V20 does better on circles than Neopaint on
a 286. Maybe it's me, though...anybody else have this problem?

I think EasyCAD has a software FPU emulator included, which may account
for the difference. I wonder if there is something similar available
for the 1000RLX, stand-alone. As far as I can tell, there does not
appear to be any place to stick a regular math copro chip in the RLX...

highly probable that it's shareware of some sort. If it's not it'll never
see the light of day in the database for public consumption anyways. If you
can remember where you downloaded it from, maybe you can pass that info along
and we can use it to get in touch with the author at the source as well as
possibly downloading the original archive file you found it in. You may have
killed the DOC file with the shareware info if you didn't keep the original

RE: Neopaint

When I had played with Neopaint in the past, also on a 1000RLX, it
did the same thing with a mouse. Start to draw a circle, or whatever,
and the mouse would let go too soon. Never did find out why, and never
had a chance to because....

As I've posted in the past, using Neopaint on this computer is dangerous.
Twice, on this machine, it locked up, and when attempting a reboot with
a Cntl Alt Delete, found that I had a 100% loss of Disk Data. In about
10 seconds, it destroyed the disk partition, or whatever, and even taking
it to Radio Shack lead to the conclusion that the data was unrecoverable.
The disk had to actually be "REPLACED".

The second time, I used that program, the same thing happened. This time
another 100% loss of data on the Hard Drive, but reformatting the drive
did the same thing.

My brother, who has this same machine, didn't beleive it was Neopaint
and wasn't convinced. So he went ahead an used it also..on a different
1000RLX. Same thing happened to him...he ended up reformatting his entire
drive.

It's an excellent program...but I won't use it on this machine. You may
do as you choose, however...but let me know if you have a similar
occurence. :).

Was this you I mentioned this to before???

I know nothing about the RLX but have a registered copy of Neopaint running
on a Tandy 4850EP (486DX2/50) with 8mb ram and Neopaint can't switch out
to 2-color mode. Deluxe Paint will do it, GeoWorks will do it, but when I
try to switch out to 2-color mode in Neopaint, my system hangs.

The 4850EP uses a WD chip with VESA support and it's not that old. The monitor
is an NEC 2A MultiSync. Given all this, I suspect a glitch in the Neopaint video

drivers. Just a hunch, though.

You might try finding out what video chip the RLX uses (or what board you've
installed, if you have), then give OSCS a call and let them know. Neopaint
is a great program at a ridiculously low price so if nothing else, they
deserve the support.

P.S. No mouse or drawing problems here.

 Mark,

That's some scary stuff, about your HD and Neopaint...no, it wasn't
me you talked to about it...

When you say the HD had to be replaced, do you mean reformatted and
reloaded, or literally physically removed and replaced?

Where you using DR-DOS at that time? SuperStor? or the ROM boot?

I have solved the immediate problem for myself:

I loaded up the Superpck disk cache that comes with DRDOS, and
configured it to use the high memory (between 640K and 1meg).
Neopaint now draws circles like a champ, does the 3D solids
just great and generally runs *almost* as fast as on our Compaq
386 with 4 megs of RAM...pretty darned impressive difference!

It took me a while to think about the cache, 'cause I don't routinely
load it (it takes up a fair chunk of the 640K RAM,and mostly I can
get by without it), but when I reread my post about the speed thing,
it dawned on me that Neopaint prob'ly swaps out to disk on low-ball
machines like mine...anyway, it works wonderfully well...In fact,
I did the same thing with EasyCAD, and it flat blazes!

Now, I admit that I'm concerned about the HD thing. I had a similar
problem with Aladdin 1.5 corrupting the SSTOR swap file, which is,
of course, lethal, in terms of getting the HD to boot. Now, aren't
I glad that I have a complete backup set? :-)

Re: Neopaint

The first time the lockup and data loss occurred, I call the Shack and
they said to bring it in, rather than mess with it myself, because
they would try to recover the day (they suspected a disk crash). Not only
couldn't they recover any date...the disk and to be Physically replaced.

They gave me a rebuilt one.

The second and third times, it was the same lock up and total loss of
data, but it was only necessary to reformat the drives, not replace
them.

This was before I implemented Superstor, so it occurred under a Dos
operating system in all 3 cases. I have wondered whether running it under
DrDos would make a difference...but haven't tried yet based on the
experience. If you're willing to brave it, and use the program notable
over the course of about the next 2 months with no problems, I might
give it a shot again also, since it is a great program, although it
does have Video limitations here.

Interesting that you were able to solve that Mouse problem, however. I
use that Superpck program as Standard Procedure...since it does seem
to speed up things here. This DrDos system is significantly faster than
my bros. system, running under Dos.

Am a bit puzzled, however, as to why a Superpack Cache in High Memory
would make a difference as far as the mouse is concerned.

 Mark,

I can't begin to imagine what that rascal could've done under
DOS to fumigate your HD...if anything, I would think it would
be more risky under DRDOS with SSTOR, since corrupting the swap
file is seemingly easier than screwing up the system the machine
was designed around...but, who can say?

Actually, in terms of risk, taking the box to Tandy for service
sounds even riskier (just kidding, honest)!

Why Superpck completely fixed the mouse thing is not clear to
me, either, but oh boy, what a difference! Speculation: the mouse,
per se, was not the problem, but rather the drawing of circles and
solids...that was the only really bad area. Maybe those 2 things are
so memory-intensive that they swap out to the HD on limited RAM boxes?
The cache would then make a big speed difference, and allow the box
to keep up with the mouse?? The high memory part being significant,
'cause that's the only way to get a decent-sized cache and have any
 regular RAM left...

Noticed last night that I was having trouble getting it to enter text.
I clicked on the text icon, got the I-beam text cursor, but it wouldn't
put any text on the screen...didn't do that before...I'll have to look
at the configurations for possible conflicts (I seem to keep adding
more and more alternate configs, just 'cause I can!). I am beginning
to get the idea, though, that this prog ain't too stable...

 Pretty, though...

 Neal,

No, it wasn't me with the hard drive crash from Neopaint, it was
Mark55, and it was under MS-DOS without SSTOR. I was speculating
that if Neopaint was gonna crash something, I would guess a SSTOR
swap file would be even more vulnerable...that did happen to me running
Aladdin 1.5 (the notoriously unstable front-end for GEnie).

Honest, I clicked the cursor *plenty* when having problems with
Neopaint text. The program is not stable on a 1000RLX, of that I
am convinced. Since the 1000RLX is what I would call an "almost
compatible", I don't think I much blame Neopaint for this...

Since I claimed to have solved the mouse problem, "more has been
revealed". With the cache turned on, I could draw circles and solids
just fine, but no amount of twiddling would allow me to place text.
So, I turned off the cache and rebooted and discovered everything
circles, solids and text worked fine. The next time I booted, only
the text worked, and the reboot after that, text worked and circles
worked only intermittently. This all with a clean configuration
(except for the mouse, of course). Also, the HD is well-maintained
with regular defrags, etc. using the SSTOR Pro utilities.

This sort of erratic behavior is just what Aladdin did before it
corrupted my swap file...I have come to the same conclusion as
Mark that Neopaint is not safe on the 1000RLX, so I have removed
it. Too bad, 'cause it is a neat program, and when I get a better
box (I want yours! Big Grin!), I'm gonna try it again...It sure
isn't the first DOS prog to have problems with older Tandy boxes, eh?

ANd we are still working on new products.

But as far as motherboards go... I know Tandy did not market motherboards,

Unfort., also has some video limitations as the Neopaint on this RLX
system..but I don't think it was quite as bad in terms of displaying
640x480x256 Gifs, but that just might be my imagination, since I haven't
seen the Neopaint for quite awhile...for obvious reason. :).

Re: Neopaint

It's Theoretically possible that running Neopaint on a Fragmented
disk could have been related to the disk crashing problem. Rather
unknown at this point.

Perhaps some days I'll defrag the disk, run the Chkdsk as you suggested,
and try to put the Neopaint on once again now that I'm running under DrDos.
Enough Parameters have changed to possibly make a major difference,
and perhaps it won't happen again, but would rather wait awhile until
Dbouley has run it for awhile on his RLX to see if he runs into a
similar problem.

How about some old trivia, Dave? :-)

Way back in the dark ages (when dinosaurs roamed the earth) the Tandy SIG
was about the only SIG on Delphi and it served as a base for all Tandy
computers (Models I, III, IV; Color Computer; 1000s; etc.). As DELPHI became
more popular, the Tandy SIG was split into the Color Computer SIG, the
Portables SIG (for the Model 100/200), and the PC SIG. As luck would have
it, the Model I/III/IV vanished over a period of time and folks with Tandy
computers (mostly the 1000s and other PC-compatibles) kept flocking to the
Tandy SIG.

There's nothing wrong with the Tandy SIG, in other words. It's just a place
where Tandy 1000 owners feel more at home. I don't speak for everyone, of
course, but I get the impression that the people here feel more comfortable
discussing such things as Tandy upgrades and add-ons, portability of
BASIC programs, and other Tandy topics than in the PC SIG.

The moral of the story? If you own a Tandy computer, welcome home. :-)

Good luck, from my experience DeskMate won't work with the version of
SuperStor bundled with DR-DOS. I tried it with DR-DOS 6 and the
PC-compatibles version of DeskMate. The specific problem I had is that
DeskMate wouldn't recognize the SSTOR partition -- refused to load or
save anything on that partition. I haven't had any problems with Stacker
or with DoubleSpace, and I hear the commercial version of SuperStor is
dandy (but have no first-hand experience with it).

Of course, it's unknown at this point in time exactly what AST will do.
However, there is some good news in all of this. So far Tandy has maintained
a fairly decent track record of maintaining and repairing all of its computers
even years after they cease production.
I don't think you should have any problems with repair.

DCS Industries is the only company that can install a motherboard into
the Tandy 1000 TL/2 case. Another alternative you might consider is that
Computer Mechanix is now doing upgrades except that it moves your existing
peripherals to a new box. I received one of the Computer Mechanix upgrades

     QuickBASIC
     From: DAIRYLADY To: GREGL

Hello, Greg,

I've been reading your notes about Tandy and AST with great interest. I
saw some AST computers at Sam's Club and brought a leaflet home. They look
very nice. Of course, I'm only dreaming right now, unfortunately. But it's
nice to know there'll be a suitable alternative to Tandy when I'm ready for
my 486 <G>.

After all the trouble with Tandy GW-BASIC and the POINT function not
working, I decided to try to learn to use QuickBASIC. (I bought it last
year, then set it aside because it looked too complicated). So I've been
reading the manuals and doing the tutorial; then I typed in four programs
from PCM: CALENDAR.BAS, CALCULAT.BAS, PUZZLE.BAS, and ATLANTIS.BAS. Wow,
pretty neat! "Atlantis," especially, because of the Screen 9 mode. I
compiled them all, by the way, just to see how it works. I don't quite get
the concept of Quick Libraries yet, though, or how to use them.

There were two small typos in the magazine printout of ATLANTIS.BAS -
the % sign was omitted from ShootR% on line 12, column 1, page 36, in the
November 1992 issue; and from DropHere% on line 4, column 2, page 48, of the
December 1992 issue. They will not be reported by QuickBASIC as errors, but
the program won't run right without them.

Now I'm really looking forward to more QuickBASIC programs in PCM. Keep
up the good work...

I see, from the July 1987 PCM index, some programs written by a Jeffrey
Morris - is that the same as our JEFFMORRIS on the PC SIG? I wondered,
because I don't recall him ever mentioning that he does programming.

                                            Sue.

That was him Sue! He probably doesn't do much any more, but he used to do

he's more into graphics stuff.

It probably is, Sue, I remember Mike (Misal) mentioning very
favorably once a program that JeffMorris had written.
I gave up trying to keep up with PC SIG Forum in Feb, just too much
that doesn't interest me at all - windows etc., but I miss seeing posts

DAIRYLADY,

I, too, have often wondered if it was the same Jeffrey Morris. There was a
graphics drawing program published in the August 1986 issue of PCM by a
Jeffrey Morris. I believe I typed it into my 1000TX and after two or three
corrections to the published listing were made it ran very nicely as I
recall. According to the article he was living in Rochester, NY at the time.

FIrst of all, you CAN get a TRSDOS disk from Radio Shack, regardless of what
your local folks think. I think Service is the place to go, but the store
should be
able to give your friend all the numbers.

How do I know? I was in our local RS when some folks came in with a model III
and no TRSDOS disk for it. I asked someone at the Tandy HQ and they told me the
DOS
is available _somewhere_ even if not in the store. Have your friend call
National Parts,
that may be it.

Might have to replce the drive(s). Recommend going to double sided 360
K drives. TRSDOS will recognize them -- uh, actually LSDOS 6.3 is the
latest, and the luxuriy of 720 K of disk space is positiviely sybaritic [heh!].

Saw your message from a few days ago.

I currently have DrDos and a compressed Superstor Drive. Also have
Deskmate up and running, which I don't use for much, except for listening
to sound files, but in most cases, it works fine.

Do get an occasional "can't read disk" for some reason, but repeating
the attempt often clears up the problem.

Have you typed any of the programs using QBASIC yet? I typed the one for
testing joysticks this weekend (very short), and found out my joysticks have
just the problem described by John Sandlin a while back, when he reported

That was basically the same problem I had, but repeating never did much
good. I can't remember which version of DeskMate I was using at the time
(probably DeskMate 3.03), but it was on a Tandy 1000 TX. I finally gave up
DR-DOS anyway since it had mucho problems with Drive A -- took it an
eternity to read a 720K floppy, and even longer to write. Nothing against
DR-DOS of course, except the fact that it and the TX didn't get along
very well together. I did like some of the features of DR-DOS, notably
Task Max, but that was before I got the 386 and got so heavily involved
with Windows.

What kind of problems were you having with Atlantis? I ran it here with
QBASIC and didn't notice any problems. I then found and made the two

I also compiled it with QuickBASIC 4.5 (before and after making the
