Tandy 1000 EX serial card/new modem
     From: PANDABEAR To: ALL

I have a Tandy 1000 EX that has a memory expansion board and a 1200 Plus
style modem card. I just got a Plus style expansion card and a new
external modem.

I would like to leave the internal modem in and use the external modem
but so far I have not been able to get the external modem to work
properly. The question is what do I need to do to get the computer to ignore
the internal modem and use the external one. What com port should the
software be set to, 1 or 2? And is there anything else that I need to do,
short of taking out the internal modem. I'm not that mechanically oriented
so I'd rather just leave it in.

Again, I already have the memory expansion board installed along with the
modem card and the new serial card. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You'll need to purchase a program designed to play music CDs. I have a
generic version put out by Software Toolworks which works fine. There are
several advertised in software catalogs but off hand I can't think of a
single name. There may well be shareware versions available by now. You
might want to check the database here on Delphi using CD-ROM as a keyword in
your search.

My thought is that it's for taking some video out of the conventional

You are right about the 128K. What happens is the video gets moved into the
new 128K memory, thereby freeing up the upper 128K originally used for video.
You still have only 640K of memory, but you can use more of it than before.

The 128K on the 1000TX is used exclusively for the video memory. It does
allow you to have a little more memory - OUT OF THE 640 K - The Tandy video
comes out of the 640K, if you add the 128K the video memory comes from there.
and you then have the memory from where the video memory had been from. Mary

I don't look at this board very often, however if you still have the problem
with the A: drive acting as a 360 maybe this will help. I have a 1000TX that
acted the same way after I upgraded to DOS 5.0. I tried everything to solve the

problem. Finally, I assigned another drive letter ( F as I recall), and told
the computer that it was a 720 drive. Sorry I can't give you the exact
commands as I don't have the DOS manual with me right now. Then when I wanted
to Format I would issue the
commandFormat F: Hope this helps.

I recently saw an ad in PCM for Replacement Motherboards for the Tandy
1000SL (among others) and I have a few questions- one, is this the ONLY
kind of motherboard that will work? I mean I see a lot of ads for used
motherboards, and I wonder if I could use them. 2) does anyone know if
you could still use the Tandy 16 color then, until you get a better video
card? and 3) does anyone know just HOW trustworthy DCS is with mail purchases?
Somehow I don't trust sending away a computer and $350... although upping
to a 386SX/33 DOES seem to make me want to mail it soon!!

I'm not sure, but it seems unlikely that DCS would make these boards if we
could just pop any standard size board into our old Tandys. I'd guess, too,
that they don't have Tandy CGA as that's a Tandy patent and DCS flogs VGA
sets in the same ads. Even the added charge to ship a monitor back to you

can't comment on their trustworthiness.

There are several paint programs that will do the job for you. Keypaint
2000 from Softkey (old pc paintbrush) and PC Paintbrush 5+ are two good
ones. PC Paintbrush 5+ directly supports the Tandy 1000 series and lets you

PC Paintbrush 5+ and have had experience with Keypaint 2000. One problem: PC
Paintbrush comes on 1.44 and 1.2mb diskettes. Keypaint is less expensive and
would suit your needs, I think.

If you have your December 1992 issue of PCM, you should look up Greg
Law's article titled, "The DCS Powerboard." It is all about the DCS
motherboard upgrades, especially what you will gain and what you will lose.
DCS has always gotten high marks from PCM for their Slot Box, and I note an
absence of complaints about them in Letters to PCM. (PCM *does* print
letters from readers who are dissatisfied with any of their advertisers, and
has stopped accepting ads from some on occasion). I've not dealt with DCS
personally, but I am looking in their direction when I feel I finally *must*
spend the money for a new hard drive.

You can find out how much memory is being set aside for video now on your
computer, out of the 640K, by typing SETUPTL/A at the C:\> prompt. Press
PGDN to get to the second screen. The choices are 16K, 32K, 64K, and 128K. If
you've never changed it since you got the computer, it is probably set at
16K. Whatever it's set for now is the amount you will gain. If you had
programs requiring more than the amount set, you would have had video memory
problems showing up. And if it was set for more than 16K, you probably had
memory problems when you tried to do much with PFS: First Publisher (I'm
assuming you got it bundled with the TL).

     Tandy CD-ROM
     From: AERIN To: ALL

I recently zpurchased a CD for a CD-ROM drive and ordered it before I
ordered the CD-ROM drive, the CD I think is supposed to be a 680 meg CD, and
if I am right I think that it has about 650 meg of files or so on it. The
CD-ROM drive that I was planning on getting was a CDR-1000 from Radio Shack,
and I figured all was well with that too. I still have yet to get the
CD-ROM drive (will soon though) but I was reading through the computer
shopped and saw something very terrifying. I saw that where they lasted
SEVERAL CD-ROM drives and there specifacations, for the Tandy CDR-1000
(about 3/4 of the maby 50 drives that they had actually) that the capacity
size listing (which I thought was the same for ALL CD-ROM drives????) was
540-630. Does this mean that this drive is not going to read the disk that I
ordered whatsoever? Thats really a bummer if so, there are several other
CD-ROM drives listed in here as well (one of which is the Mitsumi driver
that is in Software Etc for $199, and its capacity (meg) is labeled as
540-630 as well) and they all look the same, only there are a FEW drives
listed in here that say 680, and about 5 that say other things (like 540,
etc.). There are SOOOOOOO many different combinations listed here, does
that mean that if you got a CD-ROM drive that is say lets take an Example
here, the JVC Information Projects has one in here, with a list price of
$3,000 and its capacity (mb) says 540, and its speed is 300 ms?? That would
be crazy if a 3,000 drive wouldn't read a disk with any more than 540 mb on
???? I would GREATLY appreciate some help here if anyone has anything to
offer, thanks VERY much.

Unfortunately, the majority of motherboards will not fit in the tandy 1000 case
and the video on the Tandy is built into the motherboard, there is no video
card that you can use from the Tandy. You will have to buy another video card
no matter what motherboard you use to replace the one in your Tandy. As for the
128 K, you will find that you actually will have an increase from 64 - 128 K
in your useable RAM.

Tongue in cheek? Nope. Not at all.

I just thought of something. Did your 1000 come with a clock/calendar chip
in it? Or, did you have to buy the Tandy SmartWatch chip as an extra?

I bought the SmartWatch chip a couple of months after purchasing my 1000TX in
December '87. Ever since then I've been annoyed by what I call a hung-boot
condition. It doesn't happen often, but when it does it can sometimes mess
up my reminder utility. What happens is this: the BIOS screen comes up, but
then instead of proceeding with the boot, my PC just sits there. Of course,
in that state CTL-ALT-DEL doesn't work to reboot and I actually have to turn
of the power. Then when I turn the power back on it usually boots
successfully, except that the Date and/or Time will be screwed up. Sometimes
the time will be correct, but the date will be set as 1/01/1980. Other times
the date will come up as 1/01/2080 (that's when my reminder utility spills
its database).

The battery, according to Tandy, is good for ten years. And the fact that
the problem has been occurring over almost five years and only infrequently
at that leads me to believe it's not a weak chip battery, but I've never
been able to figure out the cause of the problem. When I installed my Micro-
Mainframe EMS board I removed the SmartWatch chip and carefully reseated it,
but that didn't solve the problem.

If you know of other owners of the Tandy 1000TX/SX who have installed the
SmartWatch chip ask them if they've encountered any similar problems. I'd
be interested to know.

The FCC has a Rulemaking in progress that will make it illegal to sell
motherboards for installation into a new system. Seems that changing
the board invalidates the FCC class B certification as it usually
increases radio interference produced by the computer.

The NPRM will apply to all peripheral cards, power supplies, and motherboards.

would be sold by mail. The GriD line includes numerous laptops and
many of the "Tandy" desktops as well.

By the way, Tandy's manufacturing operations are being spun off into
a totally independent compnay, as you would know if you read the
business section. This is supposed to leave Tandy free to do what
it does best -- retail -- and allow the new firm (TE Electronics, Inc) access

When you say *all* peripheral cards do mean things like modems
and other expansion cards? That's bad news for the consumer for
sure! We'll have to take our systems in to have certified
peripheral equipment installed in our systems by certified
technicians and then pay to have the system re-certified! Not a

Well,
modems and some other kinds of expansion cards already require
certification; modems have to be certified TWICE. Once under Part 15
fo radio interference, and once under Part 68 to insure it will
not scrunge up the phone service. In addition, there are some
safety standards being applied to telephone apparatus. One test lab
advertises its services with a pitcure of a flaming 'phone!

In the case of mother boards, the NPRM looks like it will permit
the installation of certified mother boards in a chassis
designed to accept them. But the FCC is still considering the comments and
reply comments on this.

You might draw an analogy with cars. We can no longer lawfully
repair and install carburetors, for example, because we are not
competent to adjust them for minimum emissions. In fact, most
modern cars are fule injeted, with computer control. And it
is _definitely_ a no-no to replace the ar's emission control
ROM with one that will pump out more dirt.

Same with radio smog. We have been adding to it, and now the gov't is
finding ways to stop that from happening.

Generally, it will prohibit the marketing of unapproved CPU boards.
You can still add memory to your existing system.

But again, compare it to automobiles; it is actually illegal to take the
\engine out of your car and replace it with another one, under EPA rules. The
reason is
the same; pollution. In one case, it's air pollution, in the other case,
electronic pollution.

It IS restrictive, but not at all stupid.

As far as going to 8 mB, you have to use a bus car with the 2500 anyway.
I have been told the HEadland controller will recognize 4 mB SIMMS if it

Nuts. It would be the December issue, 2 mos before I was able to renew
my subscription... grr... I was also wondering about that Slot Box
as well... It just made me think. Is there something like this available
for REGULAR PC's other than Tandys? Each time I look for a new computer,
I'm thinking- it doesn't have enough drives, enough slots, enough space...
etc. etc. etc. and if I buy one of those Tandys that it supports, then
I've got a much larger upgrading capacity.

I have a Tandy 2500 SX/25, which is the same basic machine with 2 megs on
the motherboard instead of 1 as on the RLX, and has an 81 meg hard drive
instead of the 52 meg. I think it is a great machine, but hindsight says I
should have waited a few months and got a 486SX machine. (Just because I
like to have the newest and the neatest available.)

I hadn't heard of the 2500 RLX. I've seen a 2500 SX/25 and a 1000
RLX, though. And a 1000 RSX (the 1000 line finally really has a
PC/AT compatible - even has 16 bit slots).
