You can use DOS 6.2 on your SL, but, you must disable the ROM DOS on the
SL.

Yes, you could use a 360K diskette to boot DOS 6.2 -- but, you would be
very limited as to what programs you could use (from 6.2).

I suggest that, DOS 6.2 for you would not be productive.

Hello, I have been reading about batch files and the commands do not appear
to be overly difficult, they allow you to set "path" or load special
drivers "mouse". To create the config.sys file you type "echo off" at
the DOS prompt, then enter the program lines. My question is how do I
designate the batch file as "config.sys" and how do I save it to disk.
On my Tandy computer "setuptl.com" does most of the work. What does
autoexec.bat do? How do I create an autoexec.bat file on my tandy 1000tl.
                            thank you, Serapions

Hello Serapions -

Recalling previous posts, I now realize that the TL is a slightly "different
animal" from what I'm used to working with (I own a TX). To explain what a
computer does at boot time, it follows this sequence...

1) It does a POST (Power On Self Test) which is where the computer checks
itself out to make sure all of the componets inside the computer are working.

2) Next, it reads a bit of code from ROM (Read Only Memory) which generally
points out to the computer where to find the rest of the startup code so it
may continue the process (hence the term BOOT, the computer pulls itself up
by its own "bootstraps").

3) Next it looks for a config.sys file which will load certain drivers and
such into memory. I forget the exact reason why config.sys is read in at
this time but it has something to do where this information is placed in
memory.

4) Finally, the computer looks for an autoexec.bat file. This is a file that
generally issues DOS commands that you would like executed at startup so you
don't have to type them in every time you do start up the computer. You can
include, in this file, any command that you can normally type in at the
command line. Also, a lot of people have, as the last line of the
autoexec.bat, a program name that they want started every time they boot up
the computer. I used to have a DOS menu program run at start up.

To create either a config.sys or autoexec.bat file, you would generally use
an editor such as EDLIN included with early versions of DOS. You would need
to consult your manually on how to use EDLIN. But to start up EDLIN to
create a file called AUTOEXEC.BAT, at the command line (DOS prompt) type
EDLIN AUTOEXEC.BAT and hit enter. This will bring up the editor ready to
accept input. When your finished, hit F6 or control-z to stop the input mode
and then type in "e" (without quotes) to exit EDLIN and write the file to
disk. Of course, like I stated earlier, the TL is a little different from
what I'm used to working with and what I've told you may not apply in you
case. Read over your DOS manual good, especially the part on EDLIN and that
should get you started.

Hi again,

The reply you got from Jeff is all correct, but using DeskMate Text (the
word processor you got with the computer) is the easiest way to create and
edit batch files and your CONFIG.SYS file on the 1000TL. I do it all the
time. When you have typed each line and pressed <Enter> at the end of each
one, press <Esc>, and you will get a Save As... dialog box. Here enter the
name of the file, such as AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS - these are the
specific file names that the computer looks for at bootup, as Jeff described
for you. All other .BAT files are done the same way. I use batch files to
start all of my non-DeskMate programs, and keep them in a \BATCH directory,
with a List Box on the Desktop for the \BATCH directory.
As examples, here are my CONFIG. SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files:

files = 35                          ) This is the
buffers = 22                        ) CONFIG. SYS file.

@echo off ) This is the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
set memo_dir=c:\memo ) You can use the "@echo off," "path=,"
set memo_file=cownotes ) "prompt=$p$g," "set dmconfig=c:\desk,"
set sound=E:\SB ) lines for your setup. All the other
set blaster=A220 I7 D1 T3 ) lines are specific to my software and
path=c:\dos;c:\desk;c:\....(etc.) ) hardware. You should change the last
prompt=$p$g                         ) line, "desk," to "d:desk," however.
set dmconfig=c:\desk ) The continuation of the "path=" line
vgafix1 ) will depend on what software you have
desk ) besides DOS and DeskMate.

"Ideally," as they say, CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT should be the only files
in your "root" directory. All other programs and files should be in directories
of their own, off the root directory, to avoid intermixing files from different
programs.

Jeff,

Hi! Yep, I still function mostly in DeskMate. In addition to the small
word processor, database, spreadsheet, and telecommunications apps in the
DeskMate integrated package that came with the computer, I have the
corresponding larger apps that are DeskMate interfaced: Q & A Write
(Symantec), filePro (Small Computer Company), Lotus Spreadsheet, and Online
(Sierra). Also MemoryMate (Broderbund) and Quicken (Intuit). These are very
powerful and versatile programs. I do 99% of our dairy record keeping,
planning, and correspondence in them. None of our dedicated dairy software
is well designed enough to take their places. A computer with Windows would
be more eyepleasing, but really not much faster after the increased time for
processing more graphics, since I have a math coprocessor, VGA, and an IDE
hard drive on this one.

   "See you on 68."

Even though Mike (MISAL) isn't too keen on Telecom in DeskMate, I made
good use of it in learning to navigate Delphi manually for months before I
got DLite - probably benefitted by learning Delphi on my own first :) As a
result I do pretty good at getting around the University of Missouri
computer, which has no interface available, with Telecom or Online.

Hi Sue -

Well, if you think about it, Deskmate could be considered a progenerator of
Windows. I know, MS actually borrowed the idea from Apple but the concept
was there. I suppose the reason why I never really used Deskmate was because
I used to spend alot of time "tinkering" with the computer and trying to
understand programming techniques. I won't go as far to say that I'm a
programmer but I written a few that suited my needs. I still experiment with
MASM but this is the first compiler I've bought in a while and it's
confusing at times. I can never get past the debug step. The code will be
syntactically (sp) correct but when it gets compiled it goes off the deep
end with all sorts of strange code coming from who knows where. The MASM
compiler has so many options that I may have inadvertently set one the wrong
way and, as a result, could be causing my own problems. Boy, I got off the
subject didn't I? :) Take care!

I have audio in and out jacks on my 2500SX/25 system that I've never used

Does software that will let me record and play back audio through the audio
subsystem actually exist? A local RS store told me DeskMate will do this for
me, but I instaled it and there is no audio applet in the package. If there is
any such software in the known Universe, I hope it will also be able to save in
a .VOC or other common format.

I hate writing code for sound more than anything else, but at the very least
I want to see some documentation (if even *that* exists) that will enable me to
write a TSR, device driver, or interrupt handler to redirect the internal
speaker to the Audio Out jack.

It's bad enough that I had been given patently false information about this
system prior to purchase, and I'm not thrilled about still paying for something
that is impossible to use.

To use DeskMate, you'll have to get the Sound and Music applications from
a Tandy 1000 RL, SL or TL. For whatever reason, Tandy didn't supply DeskMate
with that computer and the PC-compatibles version doesn't include Music and
Sound. Writing your own software to use the audio ports is actually fairly
easy since the record and play routines are in ROM -- at least they should
be in the ROM on the 2500. I can't remember the details offhand, but an
article was published in PCM on it. I'll dig through the back issues to find
it.

Assembly is not a very forgiving language. Sometimes I think I'm in over my

because of that, requires very precise coding. Leave one, little small
detail out and your PC can take on a life of it's own. Maybe I better go

Sure, Jeff. The file that you want to send is first uploaded to your Workspace.
The at the MAIL> prompt you type:

 SEND filename.ext
 (at the To: prompt) MemberName
(at the Subj: prompt) Generally the name of the file (for receiver's benefit)

The member receiving must READ the message (looks like garbage when a
binary file is read) and wait for the MAIL> prompt to return.

Then, the receiver (at the MAIL> prompt) types:

 EXT/NOH filename.ext

This "extracts" the file with "no mail header" to their Workspace, where they
can download it.

That is all there is to it!

DLite will let you do the sending of files through E-mail all

That's why I have a hexadecimal calculator. I can enter a hex number and
convert it to decimal and vice-versa. (Can also do the same with binary and
octal, but hardly ever have a need to). One of the first things I learned
(the hard way) in assembly was to convert hex to decimal for displaying to
the screen. I had written this big, long routine to do just that and was
feeling pretty good about it. Then I read a little further in a Peter Norton
book that said all you had to do to accomplish that was to keep dividing the
hex number by 10 until you reach 0, saving the remainder to an array, add 30
hex to each element which will give you the ascii code number representation
for that number. Burst my bubble real quick! <G>

That wouldn't be the Brooklyn Bridge, would it? I think I may have already
bought it as well as the London Bridge, Empire State building and the Eiffel
tower. <G>

I may have seen that TSR before, probably even downloaded it once. I just
switched over computers and I have about half on one and half on the other.
If I was smart, I would have made me one of those null modem cables. But
then I never did anything the easy way. <G> Thanks!

     tandy computer circuits
     From: SERAPIONS To: ALL

Hello,
I'm sure some devoted Tandy users must have Service manuals and data
manuals for their computers. If anyone would like to discuss Tandy computer
circuits (mother board), please contact Serapions. Everyone seems to get
hooked on programming and memory management, but I have some very good
schematics and engineering material relating to my IBM XT compatible machine.

I have an 80286 machine with a coprocessor. For the past couple of
weeks I have been learning about memory management in the 80386 MPU, some of
the concepts in addressing this MPU are difficult: protected mode, index,
descriptor, global descriptor table, local descriptor table, paging,
effective address, physical address, and the addressing registers.
                                     thanks, Serapions

No, it does not. I have never had any problems with line noise before. This
problem has never happened with other programs. (Although, once in a while
I have a strange problem with Zmodem transfers aborting at the last bytes when
it should say "Transfer complete". This is using Telix v1.0.) When mine
locks up, it beeps constantly, spews out garbage (very slowly), with some
characters that sould be there mixed in with the garbage. I am not sure if it
will return to the way it should be because I never take the time to wait for
the garbage to stop. I wouldn't mind using LYNC, but for the time being, I
think I will stick with faithful old Telix.

Any Ideas?

What you are describing is what happens to me when I get a "burst" of
line noise. The screen spews garbage and "beeps" continually. It that point
I have no choice but to end the connection.

If Telix works better for you -- "don't fix what don't break <g>".

     Tandy
     From: SERAPIONS To: MISAL

Dear Misal,
I posted a forum message trying to start a discussion about Tandy
computer circuits. From reading PCM and visiting the local computer stores
I have learned a little about hardeware such as: address decoding circuits,
interrupts, ISA bus, SCSI, DMA, Floppy Controllers, and PIC. What do you
think of Tandy hardeware, is it completely IBM compatible?

Our local Radio Schack has some terrific sales on all of their
computers. I'm curious to know if they are trying to get rid of all their
386 and 486 machines in order to make room for a new line featuring the
Pentium MPU. What improvements might the Pentium chip make in the new
multi-media graphics, better speed, better data handling?

Do you know if the Pentium MPU addresses expanded memory using the
same "paging" technique as the 80386. Also, will Tandy offer a read/write
CD in the near future? Merry Christmas, Serapions (Paul)

     From: MISAL To: SERAPIONS

Yes, Tandy will offer a read/write CD -- but, not in the near future. The
technology is already present -- but far too expensive.

Yes, the new Tandy machines are "industry standard." In fact, Tandy's policy
has changed. They do not manufacture their own computers, any longer. They
are manufactured for Tandy.

The Pentium bus standard is not really standardized as yet. This is due to
the new VESA, PCMCIA architecture. The Pentium CPU itself is not the problem.
It is the many manufactures of motherboards on which the Pentuim Chips
reside.

Now, the statement above regarding "industry standard" is confusing if there
is no standard -- this is meant as a guideline: the Tandy machines will follow
whatever the standard may be, AT THE TIME.

     Multi-media
     From: SERAPIONS To: ALL

Hello,
I took a closer look at the Tandy Mpc (multi-media) computer today, it
is really quite nice. I believe that all of the library software is on the
CD Rom, thesaurus, encyclepedia, etc. This computer uses the ISA bus, does
anyone know the difference between ISA and VESA. Does multi-media require a
special video bus?

The Mpc also has some nifty telecommunications capabilites. You can
have the computer make calls and leave messages on any answering machine.
It performs this task by translating text into speech.

I am still looking for someone to discuss Tandy hardeware with. Memory
decoders, coprocessors, and MPU's are not that much different from the
simple circuits we all studied in school (esp. motorola 6800).

Serapions,
    re: discussing Tandy hardware

I use it. It works. It doesn't mean I know exactly how it works. I just
know that it works. :-)

Running: Windows 3.1, DOS 6.2, MoneyCounts for Windows, TurboCAD for
Windows, PRODIGY for Windows, AOL for Windows, WinCIM, Q&A Write for
Windows, MS Works for Windows, D-Lite, and a bunch of other stuff with
absolutely no problems whatsoever on a Tandy 4825 SX with 20 meg of RAM, a
Tandy 2400 modem, a Tandy DMP-133 printer, a Tandy VGM-200 monitor, and a
spare floppy drive I pulled out of an old Tandy 1000 SL, not to forget my
trusty Tandy mouse. (There's also a Radio Shack telephone sitting on the
desk next to the computer.)
The only non-Tandy components are the SoundBlaster and the extra 16 meg
of RAM (both mail order).

    Tandy hardware works for me.

The VESA bus is an extension of the ISA bus that allows certain types of
cards (most notably video cards) to run at the same speed as the processor.
Typically a computer with a VESA Local Bus has eight standard ISA slots,
one to three of which have VESA extenion connectors. Of course the exact
configuration differs, but that's the jist of it.

     Printer problems
     From: SEAFROMAN To: ALL

I have recently upgraded from a TX to a 2100. I have a Tandy dmp-132 that I
have been using and intended to keep using this printer with the new PC. Of
course, the parallel ports on the TX and the 2100 are different so I had to
get a new cable. When I plugged everything in, the printer would fail to
respond. The buttons wouldn't work...nothing. The printer works fine when
plugged up to the TX so I know nothing is wrong with the printer. I was
suspecting the cable so I took an old Tandy dmp-105 out of mothballs and
hooked that up and was able to print from the start. So it seems that there
is nothing wrong with the cable. I'm begining to suspect that the contacts
on the dmp-132 may be pushed down a little too far, resulting in a poor
connection. Does anyone have any comments on this situation? Is there
something I may be overlooking? Is there a way I can pop the contacts back up
so as to enable a better connection? If so, what would be an appropriate way
to do this? I could send it off for repairs but I only want to do this as a
last resort. Thanks!

     Null Modem Woes
     From: NEAL1530 To: ALL

Hi all and happy holidays!

Maybe one of you know something about null modem serial port hookups?

I'm trying to link a Tandy 4850EP with a Tandy 1000TL/2 via a null modem cable
(standard issue bought at RS). Since the TL/2 one... er, only has 1 serial
port, I'm using the one it has (in other words, I took out the mouse).

But there's obviously something I'm missing. I've tried DR DOS' FILELINK
utility, but it reports it can't mantain connection with the TL/2 (I'm doing
all of this from the 486).

Do I have to make my own cable (is the serial port on the TL/2 somehow non-
standard?) Anything else I might be missing?

Thanks...

Neal

Diane,

I have the original 1000 TL. When I asked about putting in a 1.44 M
drive, RS said I can't do it on my model computer. Unfortunately, I can't
remember *why* they said I can't. I don't know if that also holds true for
the TL/2. Have you asked RS?

Not being all to familar with the TL2, I would think that you wold need to
run the setup to initially inform your computer that you now have a
different kind of disk drive. Try that and see if it works.

empty slot and then run the data cable from the card to the drive. I used to
have a TL2 with a 1.2 meg drive and it worked with no problems. I got the card

card. Their phone is

I don't think the Tandy 1000 TL/2 supports high-density drives, so you'll
probably have toinstall a high-density controller such as a CompatiCard.
Note that you'll have to set the CompatiCard as the secondary controller,
and I believe you have to load a device driver included with the board.

i was hoping to be able to use the card i have, a longshine #lsc-6610f
so far all my attempts have failed the best i could do was to light
up the drive light only. you can change jumpers on card, I/O to
primary, secondary settings; firmware memory locations ; and of couse
drive types the one i'm interested in is 3 1/2 1.44mg. i thank you
and the others with your advice. i am still hoping to find a way to
use this controller card. anyone who has any experience please let me
