                        GARDEN IRRIATION PROGRAM
                            with a simple PC
                            Murat AYDIN 1997

PURPOSE: This program (GARDEN) provides to computerize garden
irrigation with intervals previously planned.

REQUIREMENTS: The GARDEN needs a very simple electronic circuit. This
circuit must be placed between irrigation valve and 7.th pin of serial
port#1 of your PC.

        INTRODUCTION:

Neither a special card nor windows is necessary.
        Simply, User:
        1. inputs a date for begin garden irrigation (month-day-year)
        2. inputs a time for begin garden irrigation (hour:minute)
        3. inputs a date for stop garden irrigation (month-day-year)
        4. inputs a time for stop garden irrigation (hour:minute)
        5. inputs a time for exposure to irrigation (minute > 0.6)
        6. inputs a time for interrupt irrigation (minute > 0.6)

The GARDEN coordinates the job, sends a trigger signal to the external
electronic circuit for start/stop operation throughout irrigation. When
needed, user close/opens the irrigation valve or leaves the GARDEN in any
time immediately with use function keys.

WHERE IS THE TRIGGER SIGNAL ?
7.th pin of COM #x is enable. A convenient connector must be
prepared to the pin(s) bellowing:

                     GRND

        X X

        ELECTRONIC CIRCUIT:
Transistor Universal Npn (TUN) must be chosen any powerful "key-
transistor". I am advise to use of the 2N3055 (Motorola). The mechanic
relay must be distinguished according to specifities of electrical device
used. This circuit (exception mechanic relay) can be placed in
computer's case.
Moreover, computer's power outputs (5V and 15V) can be used as to be
+Vcc supply of this circuit. At power sockets of PCs, red cable carries
5V, while yellow cable 12 V. This circuit pulls 40-50 A in its rest position
but it is difficult to estimate activation current. It mostly depends on
resistance of the mechanic relay used. However, usually activation current
is about 80-150 mA. This magnitute electric current can be easy tolerated
by a power system of any PC/AT.

P.S. : For further detail about how the circuit works, look latest version
of COT_x and SQW_x programs at the belowing addresses:

        simtel.net/pub/simtelnet/msdos/electrcl/SQW_x.zip
        simtel.net/pub/simtelnet/msdos/electrcl/COT_x.zip
(They are also present in the Garbo archive)

MAY IT POSSIBLE TO DESTROY THE I/O CARD ?
Exactly No. This is highly safe method. However, avoid to make short-circuit
between tips of the port. (especially between the pins of mechanic relay !!!!)
Instantaneous contacts between serial pins have not deleterious
effect, *IF* it does not extent over one hour or more. Take your own risk,
or, in order to protect your I/O card, you must not omit the use a 1 k ( W)
of resistance with serially connected to the pin.(This is not a prerequisite)

HOW CAN I CHECK THE CIRCUIT WORKS BEFORE RUN
Yes, For this purpose, download the SQW_x.ZIP (~65 kbytes) from:

        simtel.net/pub/simtelnet/msdos/electrcl/sqw_x.zip
        garbo.uwasa.fi/pc/science/sqw_x.zip

The SQW_x contains a check and test menu in this purpose. You can run it.
It is very easy to use and fully compatible with this software.

HOW MANY PORTS CAN BE CONTROLED BY THE "GARDEN" PROGRAM ?

How many are there in your computer?, Two only ? or four ?. You can easy
controll each of them *but* separetly. Type :

                GARDEN <Com#>

The GARDEN will alert during working when you input a disable port number.
Default is Com#1. Although, it is possible to control up to 512 valves
with this method. However for this, a SPE card and source file of the
GARDEN is necessary.

SUMMARY OF THE ACTIVE KEYS IN THIS PROGRAM:

F1- Provides to input an irrigation plan,
checks the date and hour typedby user, rejects the incorrect input
One digit is acceptable for exposure to irrigation and
interruption time (such as 0.6 minute or 4.7 minute),
but must be equal or greater than 0.6 minute.
F2- Opens the irrigation valve immediately
F3- Shuts down the irrigation valve immediately
F4- Run the irrigation plan (if user has typed)
F5- Exit the program (without change the valve (ON-OFF) position!)
<Esc> leaves the programming in any time
