Using Hebrew on a PC equipped with VGA/EGA
------------------------------------------

HEBPC.EXE is a conversion program to remap a text file
between phonetic hebrew (Either English or Israeli Keyboard).
And also to convert between DOS Hebrew and the New ISO Hebrew
which is the Internet Standard.

My motivation was from using an HP200lx palmtop. It comes
with an utility called KEYBEZ which gives it foreign language
support (even right-to-left for hebrew). But the resultant
text uses the old DOS mapping for Hebrew. I needed to convert
it to ISO Standard before I could Email it, And back to DOS
Standard to read...

Though it may seem like alot of commands, it is really simple

See HEBPC.GIF to understand the Israeli Keyboard.
I tried to cover all possible conversions.
You probably will only use 1 or 2, but who knows which?

The 'r' switch will reverse the input file line by line.
This will be used for converting files between VISUAL and
LOGICAL generated files (Those done on native hebrew systems
or englisah systems). Or you can use it to generate hebrew
script on a computer without hebrew support. by using the
hebrew keyboard mapping scheme. HEBPC k/K to convert it
from normal characters to ISO/DOS hebrew (high ASCII).
And then the 'r' switch to reverse the file to RIGHT-to-LEFT.

End the file with a couple blank lines of extra <CR> ENTER's.
This may be needed to supress junk lines.

                    ABOUT HEBREW E-MAIL
(FOR DOS AND TYPICAL UNIX NODE)

PC Hebrew: aleph is ascii 128, and Hebrew goes up from there.
This is low in the extended ascii range. It requires 8 bits.
This is the DOS standard, and what your DOS screen font gives you.
Your editor writes and reads PC Hebrew.

ISO Hebrew: aleph is ascii 224, and alphabet goes up from there.
This is the internet standard, international standard,
and basically the standard for windows and for macs.
(so the dagesh lite uses it too, tho it can read in PC ascii)
So, you need to transform from PC to ISO before you upload
and transform from ISO to PC after you download (if you want
to use hed to read it, rather than dagesh lite).

OLD PC Hebrew: this is 7-bit, and obsolete, as it occupies essentially",0dh,0ah
the same ascii range as english lowercase letters. So, it is",0dh,0ah
best avoided. However, when ISO Hebrew gets its eighth bit",0dh,0ah
stripped off by some ignorant unix mail program (so you get",0dh,0ah
a jumble of english letters for the hebrew part of your message",0dh,0ah
and the regular english, reversed or not, mixed in), you will",0dh,0ah
get this, and will need to transform to PC or ISO. If there was",0dh,0ah
english mixed in with the Hebrew, this will be a sad situation,",0dh,0ah
as you will either get Hebrew plus jumble, or English plus jumble...",0dh,0ah,"$"
