Using Hebrew on a PC equipped with VGA/EGA
------------------------------------------

Any PC/XT compatible equipped with a VGA/EGA compatible video-board may
with ease be used for editing Hebrew texts. The edited Hebrew texts may,
for example be input for the right-to-left extension of the TeX system,
called TeXXeT.

Using Hebrew on a PC requires the following:

  1. Loading a hebrew screen font
  2. Mapping of the keyboard to Hebrew
  3. A right-to-left editor

This public domain system offers all of the three programs as described
below.

1. Loading a hebrew screen font

The public domain screen fonts offered in this package have been created
by the public domain font editor program, evafont. The fonts are loaded
by running the com-files:

    hebega for EGA displays
    hebvga for VGA displays

The Hebrew font will remain in memory until the computer is shut off.
(Details of how to change the font in memory are described in the
documentation of evafont.)

There is a problem on many laptops with loading hebrew. If you can
not get hebrew to work by the above method you might want to get
the hevga*.zip package by Yosi Gil, which *might* take care of the
screen mapping problem.

2. Mapping of the keyboard to Hebrew

Run the program

     HEB.Com

and the Hebrew keyboard mapping software will be loaded into memory.
CTRL - will popup the program to type a line of right-left Hebrew.
