Quartet (250-1146) Data File Recovery Program

The purpose of this recovery program is to recover QUARTET data from
index errors. Index errors are indicated by the display of an
ERROR 98 when trying to access a data file.

This disk contains the following files--

   QXRECOV.BAT
   QXCHNG.EXE
   QXCHECK.COB
   README.TXT

In order to obtain a printout of this README.TXT file, insert this
disk in Drive A, make sure your printer is switched on, is on line,
and at the C:\> prompt, type in the following command--

   PRINT A:README.TXT

and press <Enter>.

INSTALLATION

1. Start up your computer.

2. Insert this disk in Drive A.

3. At the C:\> prompt, type in

       CD \QUARTET

    and press <Enter>.

NOTE: In the above CD command, QUARTET is the name of the Quartet
directory on your system. If the name of the Quartet directory
is not QUARTET, substitute the appropriate name in the place
of QUARTET in this CD command line.

4. Type in

       COPY A:QX*.*

and press <Enter>. This command copies the files necessary for
the recovery to the Quartet directory on your hard drive.

5. Type in

       QXRECOV

and press <Enter>. This command starts the recovery. The
data files are opened one-by-one, re-indexed by the recovery,
    and closed.

NOTES:

   * If a Quartet data file does not exist or file recovery cannot
access one of these files, the message "MUST REFER TO BACKUP
     DATA" will appear.

   * If the message "MUST RUN FILE RECOVERY FIRST" appears, type
in the command TYPE QXRECOV.BAT | MORE and press <Enter>. The
contents of the QXRECOV.BAT file are displayed on the screen.
The line which reads "qxchng" should be listed before the line
which reads "input qxcheck k". If this message persists inspite
of the correct order of these lines, the data is damaged beyond
     recovery.

   * If the message "BAD COMMAND OR FILE NAME" is displayed, make
sure that the file INPUT.EXE is in the current directory. If it
is not, copy it from the QUARTET Processing Disk to the current
     directory.

   * If the QUARTET logo is displayed and the program returns to the
system prompt, make sure the file RUNCOBOL.COM is in the
current directory. If it is not, copy it from the QUARTET
Processing Disk to the current directory.

At the completion of the recovery, the system prompt (C:\QUARTET>,
if QUARTET is the name of your current directory) is displayed. Go
into the QUARTET program, access the data files, and check if the
ERROR 98 has been eliminated by the recovery. If the error persists,
the data is damaged beyond recovery. A previous errorless periodic
backup of the data will have to be copied to the Quartet directory
and updated to the current time.
