     RE: assembly (Re: Msg 22764)
     From: SEAFROMAN To: SERAPIONS

Hi Serapions -

The Assmebly Language book I have is entitled _Peter Norton's Assembly
Language book for the IBM PC_, probably published about 1988 or so. It's
kind of outdated, as very few people use an 8088 machine anymore and the
compilers are much more sophisticated. It's good to use if you want to get a
basic understanding of Assembly without any frills.

Assembly is tedious but that's the nature of the beast. Sure, you can write
full scale programs in Assmebly but I understand most folks use it just to
write small routines for portions of programs that may need a boost in speed
or more control over the hardware. I think C has pretty much taken over what
people would use assembly for. When IBM wrote the "Microcode" for the
AS/400, they used C instead of assembly. One quote I remember reading in a
magazine had one IBM systems programmer stating, "C has all the power of
Assembly with all the gracefullness of Assembly". I'm not quite sure what
was meant by that except that he thought that C was just as tedious as
assembly.

I enjoyed GWBasic with its ease of implementation and testing. I haven't yet
tried QBasic on my new system. I read that Qbasic is limited to 160k unless
you have a visual basic compiler in which to compile a larger program. I
thought to myself "if I had a visual basic compiler, why would I use
QBasic?" I haven't had much time for programming any, here lately but I'm
starting to get another urge to try something new on assembly. maybe I'll
finally get a TSR to work correctly this time. :)

I'll get back with you on some of those interrupts...my eyes are getting a
little fuzzy during these wee hurs of the morning. take care!

     Hard drive install?
     From: BANDMAN To: ALL

I have a Tandy 1000RSX. About a year ago. I replaced the original 52M HD with a
120 megger. Now, I'd like to add the oold (52M)
drive as a second HD. Here I'm stumped! I have installed the drive, using the
Y-cable (40-wire ribbon) that came with the 120 megger, and I have run
SETUPRSX to call the second drive D:, but the computer does not recognize the
new HD (D:)

Can anyone help me with this? The manual is of no help (gee, there's a
surprise!). I'm really not much of a hacker, and could SURE use the help!

Much appreciation!    --=>Gary <BANDMAN> McCarty<=--

Do you change the drive select jumpers on the second drive?
(...er...that's Did you change... curse these line editors!)
My only experience w/ hard drives is the IDE type, which you jumper the
terminals marked "master" for 1st drive and "slave" for the second".
Some aren't even marked, and look like extra pins on the drive cable
connector.

Yes, I removed the "CD" jumper from the 52megger, as mentioned in the docs
that came with the 120 megger. Then I attempted to setup the 52M as Hard Drive

Thanks for the response! Any other suggestions?

Stan,

Well, my experience was a little more pleasant than yours, I guess.
Once, when I was in R.S. one day several months after getting my computer, I
happened to mention that I kept getting a flyer in the mail advertising PCM,
but that it was *so much more expensive* than the other magazine ads I'd
also been getting (I had subscribed to PC/Computing for about $13 and
another one for about the same price which was bought out by PC/Computing -
they extended my subscription). The sales rep went to the back of the store
and brought out four or five old copies of theirs and *gave* them to me. I
took them home and read them and tried out some of the programs. It was
really fun, and I sent in my subscription. Some months later, I was in R.S.
again and they said they had cleaned up the back room and found a bunch more
old PCMs and did I want them? Wow, did I ever! After I exhausted all the
goodies in those, I ordered some more back issues a couple of times. I still
browse through them from time to time and pick up on information that was
beyond me at the time. I recently handed down my old CoCo that I got as a
hand-me-down (I never really got much use out of it, because I got the TL
shortly after that), and I handed on the copies of Rainbow that I got with
it, too. These magazines are like computer cookbooks. :-)

One day after I started receiving my PCM's a co-worker brought me a box of

wish I had the space to keep all of the back issues, but I can only keep the

Gary,

I read your message on your hard drive installation problem (I read
everything on the Tandy Forum), but I'm writing to you on another matter -
your last name, McCarty. I have a 2nd great-grandmother Anna McCarty, whose
name I found by obtaining the marriage license/certificate for my
great-grandparents, who were married in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1882. It says
she was born in Missouri, but that is all the information I have on her. She
married Samuel M. Richardson, and my great-grandfather Benjamin Daniel
Richardson was born in St. Louis in 1859. Samuel was a steamboat carpenter.

Do you know anything about your McCarty family history or know anyone who
does? If there is anything you can help me with, I'd surely appreciate it.

     Sample Assembly Program
     From: SEAFROMAN To: SERAPIONS

Hi Serapions -

Here's a sample of some of the Assembly interrupts. I couldn't list them
all, because there are so many but I thought you would like to see a small
sample. This is a TSR that checks for the System-Request key and will branch
to another routine if the key is pressed. It may not be perfect but it does
work for what I need and the only problem I've experienced is if I load
another program that uses the Sytem-Request key too, then mine won't work.

.model tiny
.stack
.code
.startup
jmp Install_TSR ;jump to Install_TSR routine

Int_Active byte 0 ;declare variable storage
;
New_15_Int proc far ;Int 15 handler
.if cs:Int_Active == 0 ;check if this routine is active
mov cs:Int_Active,1 ;if not active, set flag
.if ah == 85h ;check for system request key
call sys_req ;if sys-req, call routine
             .endif
             mov cs:Int_Active,0 ;reset active flag
           .endif
           pushf ;simulate interrupt call
call cs:Old_15_Int ;call original Int 15

           iret ;exit Int 15 handler
New_15_Int endp
;
System Request routine would be right here
;
Install_TSR proc far ;Start Install_TSR routine
mov ax,3515h ;get Int 15h address
           int 21h
mov word ptr Old_15_Int[0],bx ;save offset
mov word ptr Old_15_Int[2],es ;save segment
mov ax,2515h ;set new Int 15 address
mov dx,offset New_15_Int ;load new Int 15 address
           int 21h
mov dx,Install_TSR ;get start address of Install_TSR
mov cl,4 ;prepare to shift 4 bits
shr dx,cl ;shift address value right 4 bits
inc dx ;add 1 to result
mov ax,3100h ;Function to Terminate and Stay
           int 21h ;Resident, retaining everything
Install_TSR endp ;except, Install_TSR
.exit
end

That's generally the jist of it. Interrupt 15 is called by Interrupt 9
anytime a key is pressed. Control is passed to the new Interrupt 15 handler.
The new handler checks to see if the key that was pressed was the System
Request key. If it was a Sys-Req, perform the routine. If not, fall through.
Afterwards, the old Interrupt 15 is called so the key can be processed as it
normally would be. Once finished, do an Interrupt Return to pass control
back to whatever it was that you were doing.

Hi Paul -

I don't think you will find those dot(.) commands in your Peter Norton Book.
Those are a feature of the compilier called simplified directives. They just
allow you to take a few shortcuts when coding in assembly by not having to
code all the startup and segment code that you would normally have to do.
The beauty of Assembly is that it will run on any machine, from an 8088 up
through whatever is availble today. Of course, you can program to take
advantage of specific features of a particular machine but then you would
make sure that it wouldn't be run on anything else, anyway. :)

The 2100 is not compatible with the old 2000. The 2000 was a machine that was
started to assist the operation of retail operastions in
the store.

Just go to your local Radio Shack and they can get you a copy if you need.
If they don't have it in the store at the time, they can call software
exchange and get it for you.

If you need any future help, just let me know :)

As for the tl/3.....You can call your local Radio Shack and they can get
the documentation that you need. They can also call software assembly and
get the appropriate deskmate disks that you need. If they are calling National
Parts, they are calling the wrong place.

As for Deskmate, it was a good idea for a while. For a while, pre-windows,
there was no REAL user interface out there. It is something that Tandy tried
to market, with quite a bit of success I must say. It really is a pretty good
little program if used right.

If you need any help getting the items that you need, let me know and I can see
what I can do about getting you the right items that you need

So are you saying that you bought an RLX new at Radio Shack, and it didn't
come with an owner's manual, or even some kind or MS-DOS manual? That's
incredible! How do you know how to use the digital sound and speech features?
How do you know how to use the hard drive? How do you know how to add
something to the machine, such as a modem? I just got the two Deskmate
manuals for the TL/3 from National Parts, and all they cover are the 10
Deskmate applications.

I didn't get any disks with this TL/3. When I tryy to use the setup menu
(this is in ROM), it tells me to insert the "Deskmate 1" disk, which I don't
have. That's why I need to know what is on the disks that came with the TL/3.

Thanks for your help.

The Service Manual has schematics, pictures showing how to install things ans
take everything apart, parts lists, upgrade information, how to change the
clock battery, etc. I would say it is very well written and illustrated.

So you got at least 4 manuals with your TL - a DOS/BASIC manual, a "sound and
graphics manual", an owner's manual, and a Deskmate manual? I think I will
try ordering the manuals you got. I am sure there are no differences. The
TL/3 does have a built-in PS/2 style mouse port that, I believe, is missing
from the earlier models. I did get the two Deskmate manuals for the TL/3
from National Parts, but they don't mention how to use the digital sound
feature or install a modem, etc.

Thanks for your help.

The problem is that nobody at Radio Shack, including the people in Ft. Worth,
really knows what he is doing. For example, I called NatParts and tried to
order the owner's manual (the one that shows how to hook up the monitor, etc.).
I was told that the only manuals they have for the TL/3 are the Deskmate
"Getting Started" and "Reference" manuals. So the manager of a local RS
called, and SHE was told that they had the service manual, the owner's manual,
and the Getting Started manual. They sent me the service manual, the Getting
Started manual, and the Deskmate Reference manual. She called back to ask
why I was sent the Reference manual instead of the owner's manual and was
told once again that they have only the 2 Deskmate manuals. She told them
that was not true because we had the service manual right here in our hands!
She then talked to the supervisor (at NatParts), who told her that there never
was an owner's manual for the TL/3. I find this absolutely incredible, yet
it seems to have been confirmed by someone else here in the forum.

I know I can get the disks from Software Assembly, but at $7.50 a pop I would
like to know just what disks I really need first. I don't plan on using TEXT
and all that came with Deskmate, just the interface. So do you know what is
on the disks that came with the TL/3?

TOm,

The version that is on the TL/3 is the same version that is on the old SX
and TX 1000 models. i think it's version 2.11, but I'm not quite sure. I
can find out for you if you like. All come with the text boxes, and I don't
think that you can order certain files for deskmate. I think that you have to
get the whole thing. I can check on that to if you like.

The TL must be very similar in documentation and hardware to the SL, which
is what I have. From all I can tell, the ony difference is that the TL has
a 3.5 drive rather that a 5.25, and it is a 286/8 rather that an 8086/8.
Am I the only person around with an SL?

I have a 1000TL also, and I'm amazed at what you consider "extensive"
documentation. There is reasonably good documentation for DeskMate in
the manual for that, but DOS? There are DOS programs on the disk that
are not documented in the manual (the "Practical Guide"), and there are
basic commands also not listed. I, for one, am not satisfied with this
and am now trying to get complete DOS and Basic manuals.

Hello,
Yes, actually the 1000tl may have a 286 MPU, but it is wired up to
work like the 8086. My computer cannot make use of expanded memory, beyond
700kbytes. The only complaint I have is that the 1000tl runs at 8 Megaherz.
Newer computers will be running at 100 M Hz, which makes mine look like
a tricycle. There are a lot of cheap machines on the market now which
offer high speed along with hard drives. Serapions

Hello,
Good comment about the documentation. I would agree with you. The
Dos and GW-basic manual was simply a list of commands with no examples
or clarification on how to use them. For myself, I found that it was
necessary to take a college class in "Basic" to be able to program. "Dos"
is something else, most people probably don't use many of the "Dos"
commands, right, I only use "dir", "copy", "md", "rmdir", "diskcopy", and
"format" (maybe Ansi and Graphics too).
If you are interested in discussing programming, I would be glad to
contribute some of my knowledge, but over the past six months I have found
no one seriously interested in programming (in basic).
Looking forward to hearing your opinion, Serapions
