     CD-ROM Fiasco
     From: DAIRYLADY To: ALL

I just got the CDR-1000 CD-ROM drive that Tandy has on sale. Radio Shack
installed it - and made a bad mistake. It was factory preset to DMA Channel 3,
which is the same one the hard drive uses. Back at home, when I entered any
application, it was like the CD-ROM software just followed me in, and wrote
itself onto all those files. I didn't know anything was wrong until the next
time I tried to access that program. (By that time, I had been into lots of
other applications!) Then I checked a directory, and most of it was "missing."
Then I ran CHKDSK /F/V and found the trouble. Hundreds of crosslinked files.
This is a total disaster, since it had been 14 days since I had backed up, and
that was just a data file backup of my most frequently used files, not a full
hard disk backup. I have ended up reformatting the hard disk and I am still
reinstalling programs and trying to get everything back into shape. One of my
original program installation disks, which I last used to reinstall MemoryMate
for DeskMate to run on the hard disk instead of floppies has gone bad in the
meantime, too. Radio Shack is doing what they can to help me through this, to
their credit.

Since I don't consider myself a hardware tech at all, I have always had R.S. do
installations for me, except for the modem. However, when the trouble started,
I didn't waste any time getting the CD-ROM card out (and the Sound Blaster, too
- it was an "unadvertised special," so why not find out what that's all
about?). Before I put them back in, I read everything in both manuals. Here's
what I found out:

Sound Blaster uses DMA Channel 1, which is OK because that's the built-in sound
for the 3-voice sound in the 1000s and it only trades that for better sound.
The default IRQ7 setting is OK, too.

Now, you don't have any more DMA Channel options. (Ch. 0 is for screen refresh,
Ch. 2 is for your floppy disk drives, and Ch. 3 is the hard drive - I can't
picture anybody getting a CD-ROM unless they already have a hard drive). So
what you do is what is called "software installation" of the drive without
using any DMA channel. It's all explained in the manual. The main thing you
need to know to keep this from happening to you is to REMOVE THE JUMPER from
the DMA channel pins altogether BEFORE plugging in the CD-ROM drive control
board. Everything else can stay the same.

Somewhere during this whole mess - I can't remember at just what stage of it,
or what I was just then trying to do - I got an error message I haven't seen
before: "Warning: Resource DMGUF had UseCount = 01h
Warning: Resource DMCSR had UseCount = 01h" Does anybody know what causes this,
or what it means, and if anything can be done about it?

The irony in all this is that I don't even have one CD-ROM disk or even an
audio CD disk to try out on the drive yet! Oh, well...

     From: STANB To: DAIRYLADY

Susan,

It just occurred to me that with your VGA monitor you might appreciate the
graphics display program "DAZZLE". It is absolutely *STUNNING*. The program
generates a constantly changing display of graphic designs on your VGA
monitor. Download DAZZLE V5.0 from the Graphics&Sound Database in the PC
Compatibles Group. You'll be glad you did. It is shareware, but
registration is only $15. I wrote out my check the first night I downloaded
it and tried it out. It's great. On one of my trips to a meeting at the
Pentagon several months ago, a PC technician told me about it. And, I'm glad
he did. As far as I know, Version 5.0 (Release 5.0 as the author calls it)
is the latest --- and, the greatest I might add.

It will serve as a screen saver, but can only be invoked from the DOS command
line. As a TSR waiting to pop up upon N minutes of no keyboard activity, as
most true screen savers do, it would consume far too much memory.
Nevertheless, when you're going to be away from your PC, but you don't
necessarily want to turn your PC off, it's nice to run it. In fact, when I
finish uploading this message (using Mlite, BTW) I'll run it and just watch
the display for awhile.

Hi Susan. I'm a recent VGA-er, too, and remembered (upon seeing the Dazzle

the Graphics database are `Lumen' and `Oh-My-God'. Both are quite enjoyable
to watch. In the Demo database is `Kalediscope'(sic). I have a newer
version of Kalediscope (my favourite of the bunch), too, but I'm not sure if
I found it on Delphi. Those are the actual database names so a REA OH should
bring up Oh-My-God, etc. Hope you enjoy 'em, if you try 'em. ;)

I'm going to give Dazzle a try one day, too. It's just a bigger d/load!

Your comments about the DMA channels is interesting. Where did you find this
information? Also do you or anybody else know if the Micromainframe 5150
EMS board uses a DMA channel, if so which one since it seems they are all
taken? The reason I ask is I tried a different EMS board but it wouldn't
work. I beleive the problem it was having was with the built-in Tandy
graphics. Even though the built-in video was disabled via an add-in VGA card
I think the EMS board was somehow writing to I/O ports normally used by the
Tandy Graphics. Now since reading your letter it may have been writing to a
DMA channel that was already in use. I tried the board in a 1000SX(Would hang
ring bootup). I also tried it in a
1000TX and got interesting result. Same hang-up when 128K video upgrade NOT
installed. When video upgrade installed card almost worked. Memory manager
loaded and started checking EMS memory but reported parity errors and the screen

was a little crazy looking during the memory check. OH the board worked fine in

a true IBM XT so I know the memory and board were ok. If anybody has any
suggestions please write.

I learned about the DMA ("Direct Memory Access") channels in a phone call to
Tandy Support in Fort Worth some time ago when inquiring on another subject.
I keep a kind of "log" on things I learn about the computer, so I had written
the information down. When I had the problem with the new CD-ROM drive, then
read in the manual about the DMA channel setting, I remembered I had some
notes on the subject, so I looked them up.

I have often seen ads in PCM about the Micro-Mainframe EMS board for 1000s.
It must work for some people somehow, but I understand that software has to
be specifically written to use it, and not very many DOS programs that can
run on a 286 are written that way. I also understand telephone tech support
for these boards is very good if you bought the board from a PCM advertiser.
If the board came with a manual, look there first for any settings to be made
before installing it. Make notes and let everybody know what you find out,
OK?...

     Acculogic Rampat!-+ and 1000SX/TX
     From: GLENTZ To: ALL

Everyone, Received a call from Acculogic, who makes the RAMPAT!-Plus memory
expansion board that I couldn't get to work in T1000SX or TX. They informed
me they had solved the problem by working with Tandy. Seems because the 1000's
don't use parity checking there board was messing up. So they added a new
switch to the memory manager(/Z) which fixes that problem. They told me they
had tested it hands-on in a 1000tx and TL and no problems.

Sooooo Excited old me went and plunked down my money and rebought the board and
2MB of memory. Drove home fast and tried it in my 1000SX. Guess what Still
wouldn't work. My system just plain froze like it did Back in April when I
first tried the board. I took the board to work and tried it in a 1000TX that
is used for data Aquisition. Booting the system using DOS 5.0 the board worked
fine except their was still some video conflict during bootup but seemed ok
after a CLS was issued. Booting the system using Tandy DOS 3.20.22 gave no
problems whatsoever. This TX though had the 128K upgrade and I didn't have
time to disable it and try the board that way. In April the 128K video upgrade
allowed the system to boot but the board gave parity errors for all the memory.
The TX would freeze just like mine, however, when the 128K was disabled.

This is why I think the memory manager/board are writing somehow to the onboard
tandy video controller and hanging when there is no extra video memory. Yes, I
told the memory manager to only use page frame starting at D000 just like the
MicroMainframe people/board does but still no go.

My Questions are
1) What are differences in video memory addressing in TX when extra 128k is
installed vs not installed vs T1000SX?

2) Could there be enough ROM BIOS differences-SX has ver 1.02.00 TX has 1.03.00
to cause a problem? Tandy says I can't upgrade BIOS, even to TX and maintain
some features like tandy sound. WHY?

OH yeah my system has VGA card and I use Greg Laws Videobios fix. Just
installing the VGA card with no fix should disable the on-board video-RIGHT??
Since If I hook both monitors up they CGA works initially until the DOS system
memory capacity is done and then the VGA kicks in when the TANDY/Phoenix screen
Sorry, wrong, when the VGA maker/bios screen comes up. Then the T/P screen etc.

I also need to check the memory board in the TX with the 128k video upgrade
disabled to see if the board will still work.

JUst one more thing. Ihave tried my SX without the VGA, Same lockup occurs as
with VGA installed.

If anybody can help I and Acculogic would be very Grateful.

Sincerely,

Greg Lentz(GLENTZ)

GRAPHICS.COM. Load it before attempting to print out your Deskmate graphic.

Hope this helps. If it does not, send me an E-mail message and I'll dig

I don't know if I can help, Mike, but I have vaguely similar problems which
occur on my Tandy 1000SX (non-Tandy 1Meg VGA). I get `Memory Allocation
Error' and `Cannot load COMMAND' lock ups, too, and I've identified at least
one cause. My system locks up on exiting the Vuimg program after displaying
large GIFs (640x480 or bigger) in the 320x200 mode. I think it just uses up
too much conventional memory somehow and scrambles DOS.

I think that you actually have only 640K ram available, too, as the rest was
only good for Tandy video. I don't know that Paint program but think that it
is very likely not for VGA. Your VGA card should, however, start it up in a
CGA mode, unless it's designed for Tandy 16 colour only.

I can only suggest trying to free up as much memory as possible, like NOT
loading the VGA BIOS into ram (if you do load it regularly). Hope you get
some better help than this. :) Good luck.

     Control-Break in QuickBASIC
     From: BRIPLEY To: ALL

Hi All. I've just begun to learn QuickBASIC and I have a Control-Break
problem on my Tandy 1000SX which I can't seem to figure out. Whether BREAK
is set to ON or OFF, it generates a Control-C when Control-Break is pressed,
but the signal doesn't get to wherever I am at the time (in a BASIC program,
that is). If I set up some other way out and close down QuickBASIC I find
the Control-C just reaching DOS before I do (just above the DOS prompt).

I use a BREAK ON command in autoexec.bat and DOS reports that it is indeed on
when I ask. It just doesn't work! Very frustrating when the QuickBASIC
tutorial says `type DO : LOOP' and I forget my little problem and get stuck
in an infinite loop in the display screen with nowhere to go but reboot. 8-(

The rules for making .exe files state that Control-Break will be available
throughout a program if the `Produce Debug Code' option is used. Well, not
for me. Both in the QuickBASIC environment and in little .exes that I've
made, Control-Break will only work at an INPUT. I suspect, of course, that
the problem is with this computer, or its operator <g>, and not with BASIC,
although the break function works OK in GWBasic.

Any suggestions / wild guesses appreciated.

On a related note: As I don't have a Tandy DOS 3.2 manual, I've spent ten
months guessing at which .sys things should be in config.sys. QuickBASIC
wouldn't recognize the backslash key and forced me to take a shot in the
dark. I added keycnvrt.sys to config.sys and BINGO! Now I wonder how many
other programs that will affect, for better or worse.

your message was garbled but I think the answer is that no program other than
the TL/2 setup program will show the 768K. This is because the extra 128K
(768-640) is exclusivley used for the Tandy Video system and not available to
DOS. No other way to use it(ie as a ram disk) has been found yet. One thing
I found though is some of the new memory boards that work in both 8 or 16 bit
slots work better, as opposed to not at all, if the extra 128K is installed.
Even if you have added an external video such as VGA. Hope this helps>

     acculogic RamPat-Plus
     From: GLENTZ To: ALL

Just an update on the neat EMS/XMS card I have been trying to get working
in my 1000sx. Answer is No luck. Acculogic hasn't yet figured it out. They
do say it is compatible in the TL and above. I got it to work in a TX but
only with the extra 128K installed even if a VGA card was installed too. They
told me they are working with Tandy to see if a soln can be found without
requiring a major rework of their board. The board does work fine in a IBM XT.
To refresh your memory, board is half length 8 or 16 bit board that can provide
both EMS and Extended memory depending on what slot it is in(8 bit=EMS only).
Board will work in PC/XT/AT/386 etc and provides 2-16MB of additional memory
thru use of 1 or 4MB SIMMS. Sells for <$150 0K and I'm seeing it in more and
more stores since spring of this year.

Intel matched memory classic memory boar
     From: GLENTZ To: ALL

Intel has a new Expande/extended memory board that will fit into T1000's
3/4 length slots. From description it seems to be just like the RamPAT!-Plus
(see message 21437) in terms of capability. Has anyone tried it yet in a 1000
series computer? If so what were the results? Which 1000 model? etc etc.
For 8 bit slots can provide up to 8MB expanded memory using 1MB simms. It
will also go into a 16bit slot(True AT bus) and can provide 8MB as expanded or
extended. Basically it is a smaller version of their INTEL ABOVE BOARDS I
believe. So if anyone has tried it yet(<?15$150 locally, $120 mail order)
please
let me know.

GLENTZ (and DON302),
I have a 1000 TL rather than a TL/2, but it might work the same - before I
added VGA, I also got that 128K video chip. It made everything that is
graphics-intensive run a lot faster, even though I already had a math co-
processor installed. If you happen to have POP! Utilities for DeskMate, run
the CKEQUIP.PDM application - the presence of the 128K video chip will be
indicated there. Also remember that whatever portion of your 640K was for-
merly set aside for video in your SETUPTL/A (maybe SETUPTL2/A for you) is now
"released" for use by your programs. I think you'll be glad you have it. BTW,
if you later upgrade to VGA, the video memory chip does not have any effect
either for good or bad. I just left mine in place because - who knows - I
might want it someday and I'll always know where it is!

yes I have been asking about 128K upgrade but not for my machine. I have
Tandy 1000SX which can't be upgraded in that way. Please see below for
inquiries

IMPORTANT NEWS

2 new memory boards on the market. One by INTEL other by ACCULOGIC. Both
<$150 0K. Both boards are short boards and fit in T1000's. Both boards will
supply gobs of Expanded memory using SIMMS when installed in 8 bit slots.
Boards can also be used in 16 bit slots and then will supply extended memory too

BOARDS MAY OR MAYNOT WORK IN T1000's. I have experienced the following using
both a T1000SX and T1000TX. Neither board would work in the 1000SX. BOTH
boards WORKED in the 1000TX BUT only with the extra 128K video memory installed.

The INTEL board seemed to work best and both boards were better behaved when the

TX was started using Tandy/MS DOS 3.20.xx as opposed to MS DOS 5.0.

The INTEL board states that it has to use the 9 chip 1MB SIMMs and not the 3
chip kind but I got it to work fine with 3 chip kind. USER beware though.

MY best theory and questions after working with both boards is the following.

OH WAIT-I also tried both computers with VGA and it didn't help. IN FACT the

TX with VGA installed STILL REQUIRED the 128K upgrade even though the TANDY
graphics had been disabled.

MY theory/question. Obviously 128k upgrade is needed but why? The INTEL
EMM.sys, in the TX+128K will correctly report an error when the board is
not installed and allow you to continue. In the plain TX the software reports
no board(when board is not installed) but hangs system after that. In the SX
with no board the memory manager just hangs at the title screen with no error
report. QUESTION? What is it about tandy video(even when VGA installed) that
would keep memory manager for a HARDWARE 4.0 board from working but only when
128K upgrade is not installed or available?
I know it could be in the TANDY BIOS also. What does anyone have to say?

PLEASE any help/suggestion would be appreciated. ACCULOGIC seems very
interested in solving the problem and has been working with TANDY to some
extent.

Thanks for reading this

     filePro for Deskmate
     From: KUDUT To: ALL

Dear friends,

I just received filePro for Deskmate from my local Radio Shack.
Luckally, another close Radio Shack had one and could ship it over, otherwise
I'd be waiting a couple of weeks for it...

It's GREAT! filePro is the PERFECT addition to my collection of
Deskmate software! I don't know what the "current" one they're selling is
like, but I know it doesn't use Deskmate, which is a strike against it, in
my mind (of course, in most people's minds, it shouldn't make any difference,
but I really love using Deskmate)

In one 1/2 hour with it, I've imported my entire (rather large)
Address Book, created a screen for it that uses those neat Radio Buttons
and a couple of Check Boxes where I thought it was necessary, and, basically,
created a system that is incredibly usable and Friendly!

All of the data entry that my business will be doing will be done
using this program. I have no need (yet) for a relational database, but when
I do, I'll have the option to upgrade either filePro Plus (or Professional,
I forget which it's called), or to Foxpro (my 2nd favoriate Database program),
or even Dbase!

If you use Deskmate, please look into "special order"ing a copy of
filePro for Deskmate. Already I'm hooked on it, and extremely happy with my
purchase.

     From: NEAL1530 To: ALL

For no particular reason, I re-loaded DeskMate 3.05 and took a look around at
the Draw program.
1. Draw is a vector-based program. Has anyone ever written a utility to convert
Draw files to other formats?
2. The 6 pieces of clipart provided with the program are also vector-based. I
think I am correct in saying that no one... not even Tandy... has ever released
additional clipart for Draw. If so, why not?
3. Has anyone ever written a utility for converting other vector images, like
.cgm or Quattro Pro's .clp so they could be imported to Draw?

4. DeskMate v3.05 Draw uses Atech format .FF1 outline scalable fonts. This means

if you have MicroLogic's MoreType or Atech's AllType and a bunch of fonts, you
can be in Draw font heaven.

1) As far as I know, there aren't (YET) any conversion utilities. HOWEVER --
Draw .FIG's can be imported into almost ANY Deskmate application.

2) **** NEWS FLASH ****

In the Beta Stages, but released to the public on PC_Link/America Online,
Tandy Research and Development has created a ClipArt Editor!

Basically, here's what you do (when you get the program -- I'll upload it
here on Delphi sooner or later :D ):

You Create an "OBJECT". This means that you draw a picture, using whatever
methods you choose. Then you "SELECT ALL" (Control-A), and hit the F4 menu (I
think) and "Make Object".

Then, you can head on over to the clip art editor and Import the image into
a clip art format! Or, you can do like lazy me did and stick the clip art onto
the clipboard, then pasted it into the clip art editor.

Already, in just 3 weeks, over 90 people downloaded one of my creations on
PC-Link. I took all of the clip art that deskmate came with, and did a
Ted Turner -- I Colored them! Now, the cute little rose is Red, with a grey
Vase, the silly bug has green eyes, yellow legs and a blue back (I think).

It's really an amazing thing to have -- they don't really give any documentation

beyond a little README.DOC type file. But it's enough.

3) Hmm...

I cant' think of anything yet.... although, once again... there are some
converters for Lotus 1-2-3 for Deskmate that allow you to import the graphs
into Draw, etc... but nothing stand-alone.

Hope this helps :)

Replying to another post of yours as I browse: If you like PCM and think
you might want some of the back issues, you should probably do it soon. They
used to list all the available back issues each month, but for almost a year
now, they just say to call and ask about availability. Many issues are sold
out by now. IMO, the best years for PCM were 1988-1991, when the amateur
GW-BASIC programmers were most active. I would much rather play around with
those BASIC programs than watch TV in my spare time, and I get a lot for my
money. Right now, I'm trying to repair a lot of those programs that were
damaged when I had the CD-ROM drive installed, and then get back to making
VGA changes in some of the other programs. Also, PCM is packed with
information about the hardware you have.

I, too, am a great fan of PCM Magazine. I've certainly learned a lot from
it. If I spot a program listing that I think I'll be interested in using, I
usually make a copy of the article and store it a looseleaf binder. That
probably violates copyright laws, but I argue that it's much easier to type
in a program in a form that will lie flat rather from a bound magazine.

In any case, I wish I could find space to store all those back issues of PCM
(I've been a subscriber since early 1988), but I just can't carve out the
space to store more than about three year's back issues. There's a lot of
knowledge in all those issues.

RE: help with modem (Re: Msg 21452)
     From: SANDLINJ To: INGELID

Well, if the phone isn't ringing, I'd say the problem is on the
other computer. After all, that is the machine that is dialing
the phone. Your computer is just sitting there waiting for the
phone to ring. Once it does, ATA should work.

Also, if you want it to automatically answer, without you having
to type ATA, you can enter:

  ATS0=1

The next time your phone line rings, the computer will detect the
ring and answer after one ring (change the one to any other
number for that number of rings). When you don't want it to
automatically answer, type:

  ATS0=0

And if you are already on a (voice) phone call and want to switch
to a data call you type ATA while the other person types:

  ATX0D

The X0 sets the response set of the modem to it's most basic
level. It won't check for dial tone. The D then originates and
waits for carrier (the same as it would if it dialed a number).

Hope this helps!

Jeff,
I'm assuming you have the modem hardware set to auto-answer (usually a
jumper on the modem, if it is internal). You didn't specify what kind of
modem you were using, but I'm also assuming you're using Tandy hardware
(something to do with the name of the SIG). Try typing ATA before the phone
rings (within a comm program, of course), and the modem should seize the
line.
The comm program you got from Delphi is pretty much limited to calling
Delphi and not much else, so you may want to look for another. There are
some shareware products located in the PC SIG database which might be of
more use to you.
Also, with your modem set to auto-answer, you will not be able to
receive voice calls on the same line. All calls will be intercepted by the
modem. Since, for the above reason, I have never configured my modem for
auto-answering, you may want to confirm the information I've offered with
another source. I did read the manual, though! :-)

I usually keep the most recent issues --- about 3 year's worth, because
that's all that my magazine rack cam accomodate. Whenever I see that the

I'm glad I discovered the existence of PCM when I did in early 1988 because I
believe there's no better magazine for new users as well as the experienced.
When I bought this 1000TX in Dec. '87 I knew absolutely nothing about PC's
despite the fact that I've been programming on mainframes since 1965 at the
US Army Ballistic Research Laboratory, site of the ENIAC. I mean, I'm rooted
in the punch-card age!!! Seriously though, I've learned a lot here at home
that's really helped me at work. Our Director, unfortunately, is a bit
stingy with training funds and sometimes it catches up with us. Example:
the Clerk/Typist in Reports Distribution who didn't know the difference
between Double Density diskettes and High Density diskettes. She formatted
some of the DD floppies on a HD drive (to 1.22Mb). Unretrievable data loss

Allegretto,

If the TL/3 is like the TL, that 128K is a *video* memory chip, and
cannot be used for anything else. However, it is worth the money (assuming
you are using a CGA monitor such as the CM-11 - if you have VGA, it
supposedly doesn't do anything that your VGA card isn't already doing). It
will free up some of the 640K for programs. I also put in a math coprocessor
before I got the video chip. The two things together really made a
difference in speed. (I have since gotten VGA).
