Tell me aliitle more about your problem. I have a TL/2 and a second drive (a
Teac 3.5" hd floppy and it works fine.) You ARE using a controller card for
that second drive aren't you? Also, my drive designation is E: because the
TL/2 will not recognize it as B: or A:. One last note, if you are using the
controller card, designating the drive as E:, so on, so on,... did you put a
command line for DMA and IRQ in your config.sys file? This is necessary for
the TL/2 to recognize the drive. Get back with me and let me know if any of
this helps. BTW, who did you buy the drive from?

I've been using a Tandy 4000 at work for a few years now. We bought it with
1 MEG installed. When I wanted to upgrade to 4 MEGS we bought 4 1Mx9 simms
and installed them. The sytem would not recognize the 4 MEG either. A quick
call to a local R.S. technician revealed that the model we had was going
to have to fully populated with 8 1Mx9 simms for the system to recognize
that simm configuration. By the way these simms were not from R.S. , I
bought them from I.C. Express and were standard 80ns simms used in PC's.
After I installed 4 more 1 MEG simms the sytem setup configured properly.
Oh, by the way, the original 1 MEG the system had were 4 256x9 100ns simms.

it and checked it out and it works great on my 1400HD. It even sees (But
apparantly can't use) the 128K upgrade in my Tandy 1000 TL. It's the first
memory manager I've ever seen which recognises this memory in the Tandy 1000

Just curious, *WHICH* model of T-1000 you have? You can not add a new graphic
board on older T-1000 models...

Since at boot time, it looks ok to you, I have a feeling you are running a
program that ran in mono, and when it ends, it leaves the screen in the same
state.
If it is that so, it might be easy to write a small .COM (even direct from
DEBUG), with a INT 10H call, to put the video back to COLOR text mode...
thinking of it, MODE CO80 should work just as well.

That's the hunch I have, given the little information you gave... hope it
helps...

Theoretically (and technically, I suppose) you're correct: common knowledge
hjas it that 256k won't get you 256 colors in 640x480. As I'm running a 256k
board (Paradise Plus), however, I find this to be true only some of the time,
most often in programs th
at don't support 256 colors. I'm pretty sure I can get Deluxe Paint II Enhanced
to operate in 640x480x256, and I can certainly do it in Desktop Paint, a
shareware program I've been experimenting with. In fact, 256 color gifs
displayed in this program are 1
00 times better than the display in CShow. I believe there are ways for
programs to get around the theoretical limitations. The interesting thing is,
while Deluxe Paint uses a routine to simulate colors in some of its modes, the
colors in Desktop Paint are
pure... no signs of dithering or any other illusionary devices.

     From: TAHITI To: SANDLINJ

I have two 3000NL's. In order to access UMB's I upgraded my BIOS to a C & T
286 BIOS. There are two types, the AMI, which works just fine in concert with
QRAM and a Phoenix version which also works fine in concert with QRAM.
When I first upgraded I found the AMI version slowed down my floppy drive
access time when used with TSR's which speed up the machine such as QFRESH.
Without QFRESH and other TSR's like it the machine functions perfectly. In
addition both of these BIOS's
allow you to define your own Hard Drive Parameters.
One oddity I discovered with both upgrades is that after using them and
activating the C & T Neat chip set, I could remove them and replace them with
my original BIOS's and still have the C & T Neat chip sets functional. Why, I
don't have a clue. My 3000
with the AMI BIOS and QRAM creates 196k in UMB's - my 3000 with the Phoenix
BIOS and QRAM creates 176k in UMB's. Why there is a difference I do not know.

I purchased both from UPGRADES, ETC. INCORPORATED in Calabasas, CA. They
advertise the AMI version in their catalog and say they have a Phoenix version.
The Phoenix version which I am using is V3.10.00 and is THE ONLY PHOENIX
VERSION WHICH WORKS. I purc
hased it from them last summer. I tried to purchase another from them in the
fall and all they could find was a version 1.00 which does NOT WORK. If they
cannot provide you with the PHOENIX V3.10.00 then go with the AMI.

with several utilities specific to the 1400HD and there is no guarantee it will
work with other Tandy ma

I noticed on my machine that the program which is supposed to show you the
amount of the 128k of memory used by your TSR's does not seem to show anything.
However, the TSR's are there, at least on my 1400. I moved my mouse driver and
battery watch into t
h 128k and cleared several k of lower memory. Both work fine but neither
registers as being in the 128k. Why I do not know.
Anyway, give it a try. It just might work.

Thanks for your comment on the program I recently uploaded (T14MEM). I use it
to access the 128k video memory on my 1400HD. At first it seemed as if it was
not working. No matter what I did I could not get the program to indicate
anything was in that 12
8k. Then I experimented. I removed my mouse driver from my config.sys file
and placed the mouse.com file in the autoexec.bat. I followed the doc
instructions for placing TSR's in the 128k and moved mouse.com and the battery
watch program as well as a co
uple of other TSR's into the 128k.  When I rebooted all of the TSR's worked;
all of the memory they used in the lower 640k was restored but the T14MEM
program would not indicate that ANY of them were actually in that 128k. I have
NO CLUE as to why.

But, still have no way to be sure the T14MEM program will work on any machine
other than the 1400 line. But it seems to me that if it can be written to work
on a 1400 it can be written to work on a 1000.

     Xebec Controller
     From: TAHITI To: ALL

I have an Xebec Controller in my 1000SX connected to two external Tandy 20Meg
hard drives. I recently tried to replace this controller with a newer DTC
controller. The external drives would not respond.

According to Tandy Tech the Xebec controller sends a signal to the external
drives turning them on. I would very much like to replace this old Xebec
controller. Anyone know how or with what???

Any information would be much appreciated.

Thanks!!!

I'm not familiar with the SL and how it may vary from the TL/2. I have Deluxe
Paint II enhanced which is jampacked with features. It runs in about a dozen
different video modes including Tandy 16-color TCGA. You need 640k to run up to
about 640x400 and 1mb
memory (I think) to run the svga modes properly. If you decide to go for it,
make sure the package says "enhanced" (not a sticker, but written on the
box)... some stores have older versions hanging around and there are big
differences between DP II and DP
II enhanced (some DP II packages have a sticker on them that says "enhanced"
but its not the same version -- just enhanced over DP version 1).

     From: AIRFORCEGI To: SWEENEY$4751

OK,
Therein may be your problem. I am by no stretch of the imagination a
computer genius, but these TL/2's force you to learn at least a little. <G>.
A TL/2 will NOT support a 3.5" hign densisty drive on its own accord. Either
it doesn't have the necessary controller or something like that, I just know
that it will not do it. What i did was buy a drive and controller card
combo. By the way, the ribbon on my new drive was also modified by reversing
about the last two or three wires in order to make it Tandy compatible, it
is a Teac drive so this may be another complication to your woes. The
controller card I got required me to set DMA and IRQ codes in my CONFIG.SYS
file. The drive cannot be designated as b: because that drive designation is
configured in the ROM and as I mentioned before, the TL/2 won't support the
drive. My drive is designated as e: because it cannot be b:, I have a hard
drive c:, and the TL/2 uses d: as the drive for the deskmate ROM. I strongly
suggest that you make a call to Computer Mechanix 1-800-448-1436. These
folks do nothing but make hardware products for Tandy computers, a lot of
which Tandy itself doesn't even make. And they're GOOD. Tandy's are good
computers but they are not as forgiving as Clones and they are very fickle
as to what you invite into their space <G>. I hope this helps at least a
little. I know that you've got some conflicting advise from other Tandy
owners but it may be that they don't have a TL/2 and that these quirks are
model specific. Anyway, I hope you get your problem sorted out. I got my
drive and card from CM for 85.00. Maybe you can work out some sorta trade
with them. Let me know how it all comes out.

The problem with DR-DOS is that it reads the boot sector (and I suspect the
FAT) after EVERY read and write operation on the floppy. It sounds as if
it doesn't know the drive supports change-line and adding DRIVPARM doesn't
help. One work-around is to use DRIVER.SYS, either with /C or without it.
Either way the floppy runs normally with DRIVER.SYS installed -- assuming
of course you use the logical drive.

You may want to look at the advertisement for MicroLab in either Computer
Shopper or PC Sources. MicroLab has a much better deal on ViewSonic monitors.
Here you can get a ViewSonic Super VGA monitor (1024x768 interlaced with .28mm
dot pitch) for $289, or you can go with the non-interlaced monitor for $349.

You might also look into other VGA cards as well that allow future expansion.
For example, you can get a 1-Meg VGA board (1024x768 with 256 colors) for
around $130 or less. The Diamond VGA card in the MicroLab ad is $129.

Of course I'm using MicroLab as an example of some of the deals available.
Which company you buy the components from is your decision. All I'm saying
is that you can tack another $40 to the price of the basic VGA system
and get a "fully loaded" VGA system that will move with you should you
decide to later move to another computer.

And yes, most 16-bit VGA boards work fine in an 8-bit slot. If you have a
little time on your hands, another VGA round-up is in the April 1992 issue
of PCM.

Look through the advertisements in PCM. At least one company sells a kit

mistaken, I think it uses the CompatiCard IV floppy controller that can
be installed as a secondary floppy controller -- meaning it works in
conjunction with the on-board floppy controller. I'm not sure if it will
work in the SX, but we used it in the TL/3, and I think in a TL/2.

Some of you know from the PC SIG I am considering a Tandy 386sx25 system. I
made another trip to Radio Shack along with one of my friends who knows more
than I do and we ran a program called InfoPlus. The program's manual says it
can identify Soundblaaster and Adlib cards if present. The salesman/manager
told me that the sound capabilities built into this system are as good as
Soundblaster and will eliminate the need to get SB. InfoPlus said no sound
card was there. So is this system equipped with some unique sound system not
compatible with anything else in the world or is it that IP couldn't find the
sound system because it is not on a expansion board? How about quality.. is it
really as good as SB or Adlib? The people heree don't seem to know this model
well so I'm looking for independent information from someone here who would
really know. BTW, this system does seem to compare well to mail order prices.
I've found lower but I've also seen much higher. Seems like IBM (brand) is the
most expensive of all. Ok, thanks if you can help.

I don't know about the machine you're talking about, but I DO Know
about INFOPLUS and it's not 100% accurate in all it's findings. I have a
SoundBlaster in my Tandy 1000 TL (Which means I have both SoundBlaster AND
Tandy sound capabilities). The INFOPLUS program wasn't able to find my Tandy
sound capabilities in any form. I'm not sure whether it's because it tests
for the SoundBlaster 1st and upon finding it ignored the Tandy or What, but
I highly reccommend running more than one software package on a machine to
test it and compare the results of both packages before making a decision.
If you're specifically looking for the Sound compatibility of the 386Tandy
system, I'd first off ask the salesman what soundboards it's compatible with
and 2nd, I'd test some sound Software on it to make sure it's what you want.
Just some helpful tips (I hope) ...Jax...

Stephanie,

Tandy computers have long had better sound capabilities than many clones
(the ones I've seen anyway) and they can be programmed by industrious owners to
do many interesting things. There's not much commercial support for Tandy
sound, though. I've only seen a few games that have driver programs for Tandy,
and from what I have seen, shareware support is nil. Programs that use both
Soundblaster and Adlib are everywhere, both commercial and shareware. I think
Tandy makes decent computers, and if that's what you eventuallly buy, you could
add some Soundblaster fun later. Keep looking awhile though, and the prices
will get lower each day you wait! The Tandy probably won't go back up in
price, anyway. Here in Canada a Tandy sale price is the new permanent price
until it is lowered (permanently) for the next sale.

About the IBMs: Of course they're the most expensive! If they weren't,
we might not think they're the best, right?

Radioshack still has the memory board listed in their

You have Procomm Plus setup about as optimum as you are likely to
get it. You should have ZModem Autodownloads turned on, as well
as the option for resuming an aborted download.

The strange, spurious characters are probably line noise.
Nothing you can set on PC-Plus will cure those, but you may be
able to rig up a hardware noise filter (MISAL loaded the
instructions for making one into the PC Compatibles SIG

This was in a regular store. There was a special computer store but it's more
or less gone now.. they handle support and accept things needing repair but
they no longer sell anything. The store will be completely closed soon. They
don't seem to care about anyone who hasn't yet bought something. The
manager/salesman I talk to says their 2500SX/25's onboard sound is 100%
Soundblaster compatible. But now I really know how unknowledgeable he is..
He told me a while back that this system comes with a 16 bit scsi port. My
last time at the store he said there are 3 scsi ports. My last time there I
was accompanied by my friend who knows electronics better than me, and he wanted

to have a look at the scsi port(s). Turns out he was confused about the
differences between scsi ports and expansion slots. Even I know the difference!

He went over to the phone for a few minutes and then came back and admitted
those connections were slots and not scsi ports as he thought. He said he hd
scsi cards for those slots for $350 each. My friend told me to not get one and
even if I needed one I could get a Always 2000 scsi card for under $200.

The sale on this system expires on Saturday the 28th so I will have to decide
soon if I want that system. But considering who I am dealing with at Radio
Shack I have to wonder if getting a new pc from them is worth it.

Bob,
Most 16 Bit VGA cards that I've seen will also work, albeit slower, in an
8 bit slot so there shouldn't be a problem. Check your back issues of PCM for
their VGA issue. It lists quite a few cards that will work in the Tandy 1000's.
Most VGA monitors will be fine with any card, but if you're wanting SVGA make
sure you get a monitor that will do the higher SVGA resolutions as well as the
standard ones. I reccommend you spend a little extra and get a MultiSync
monitor if you can swing it. They support the most cards.

I really don't know what they are doing. Stephanie and Marguerite said
that they closed down the computer centers in there areas. On Long Island
they seem to be keeping them open but adding the regular outlets to them. I
allways find that it is better to go to one of these `Computer Center and
More' stores for advice. They allways seem to have one person in them that
know Tandy computers. When I go into one of the regular outlets, it seems
that they are more interested in selling you anything that you are willing
to buy.

How is your SX20 doing? I added 2meg of system ram and 256K of video ram
to mine. I just bought a DMP202 printer to go along with it. I got tired of
the 9 pin DMP132 that I had. I put the 132 back on the 1000TX that I still
use.

     Clip Art
     From: ANTHONYKODIS To: ALL

I've just read the PCM article on Clip Art and it wasn't particularly helpful.
I need to know what formats of clip art can I use on a Tandy 1000SL, using a
CM-5 monitor and a DMP-133 printer.
I would like to be able to get it into DRAW.PDM (although I do have several
other shareware options available)
for retouching before exporting it into Q&A. I'm new to this forum, and any
help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance -- Tony --

Most programs that process clip-art will handle the PCX format (PC Paintbrush).
We have such "clips" in the PC-SIG Database under the Graphics & Sound Topic.

The software that you run will have a great deal of influnece on what grafics
can be handled by your computer, although your computer can only handle TGA,
so any graphics shown will only show in the Tandy 16 Color format - ie. EGA &
VGA grafics will not be shown as EGA or VGA only TGA (which is better than the
4 color CGA found on most computers with CGA). Mary

WHsI have a DMP-133 printer, and it is capable of printing in landscape mode
in DeskMate applications. I've checked the manual, and I am unable to find
a command code to get the printer to do this with other applications (Q&A Write
or Q&A 4.0 or ProCalc 3D). Is DeskMate converting the page to graphics and then
printing it, or is there an unlisted command code to do this?

I heard that Tandy was closing the Computer Stores and come Jan of 92 (that
is correct, not a misprint) that Tandy was going to sell computers from all
mfgs. Mabey something is holding them up, mabey the rumor is not correct.

As for the 2500 sx/20, the computer is doing well. I spend time here on
Delphi but with the warm months comming, I will spend less time here and
more time outside.

Also I have my Ham license and got a DJ-580 t/e Alinco transciever today for
$389. That may seem expensive but it covers 2 bands and the ones for $300
would cover only 1 band so I said what the heck, for the extra $100 why not.

I am just getting to know the DJ 580 and figure by the year 2000 I will know
how to turn the thing on.

     disk drive
     From: NYMAN To: ALL

I ran into a problem that I thought nothing about until I heard that someone
else had the same thing happen to them.

I formatted some 3 1/2 inch (720) on my 1.4 drive on my PC comp. and then
took them upstairs to my Tandy TL2 and transfered programs from the hard drive
to the disks and then formatted the hard drive. When I copied the programs
back from the disks to the hard drive I had a lot of errors. Is this a common
problem with formatting 720 with a 1.4 drive?

I seem to recall hearing somewhere that there is place you can log onto with
a modem or call on the phone to get the number of a person you want even if
you don't remember the town they live in. In this day of computers I can
see where it is possible that there is such a database around. I can't
find anything on Delphi like that. I know the name and the state, but
that is all.

Could anyone give me some help on this?

I got a hold of an original Tandy 1000. It has Tandy memory boards installed
that bring it up to 640K and a VM-2 green mono monitor. The problem is at
boot up I get the following message:

          Data Fault: Written:5555h Read:555Dh

It doesn't beep or anything, it just displays the above as soon as you power
it up. Does anyone have any suggestions? Abel

DeskMate is converting it to graphics, so you'll need to use an application

I've never had any problems formatting 720K disks in a high-density drives
(3.5-inch disks that is), and I do it all the time. I have a Tandy 1000 TL/3
and a Tandy 4033 LX at work (both the 1.44-meg drives), and a Tandy 1000 TX
at home and often format the disks at work to bring stuff home. I also have
a Tandy 1000 RLX at home, and use it to bulk format 720K disks because it
formats disks so much faster than the TX.

Just for infor, Tandy has converted all their Computer Centers to either
Business Products centers or to Education Sales centers, they are no longer
selling computers directly. Some of the old Tany 11 centers (computer centers)
were converted to 01 stores (radio shacks). I work in Fort Worth at the
"world headquarters of Tandy" [wow!]. We had many problems keeping track of
who was what during the changeover. Tandy is now opening, in your area soon
probably, Computer City Supercenters. They will be big (?) discount warehouse
type of sales places. They are supposed to stock Tandy, IBM, Victor, Apple,
Compaq and all those low priced machines, <grin>, actually that should have
been a chuckle I guess....and you are all right, most Radio Shack employees
do not know the difference between a SCSI port and a can of Shinola..
I also used to work in one of THOSE places too...

Several things come to mind:

Is the cable a RS cable for the IV? some 'generic' ones won't work
Is the program she's using set up for a similar printer?
Is the printer getting any of this at all?
Is the printer serial or parallel or both?

There is more but just for the fun of it, hook up the printer and go into
basic and write some code that prints the output to the printer.

ex:
10 lprint " hello, this is a printer test "
20 end

if you get that line on the paper, the problem is in the other software
setup (ie word processor)

Never really heard of that particular printer but it must be somewhat
compatible.

just yell if you need more~
