ABOUT__________________________________________________________

What's EasyJump? Well if you've got windows 98 with IE4 or later, then you'd know about it's handy little feature called 'auto-complete'. You can find this feature at work when you select the run option from the start button. What ever you type in the run-edit box gets stored, so next time if you begin to enter text the same way, windows will automatically fill the rest of the text by looking at it's pre typed record, then you can either accept it's data or ignore by just typing over it. This saves time and energy, but there hasn't been any prog to do this wonder in a dos box where it can be more useful. This's where EasyJump comes in. It does the same work as the windows auto-complete but in an environment where it's badly needed, DOS-mode.

You must've had directories or file names with crazy names which are hard to type and often requires you to either rename them to more meaningful names or to use a program which shows directories and file names graphically, such as Norton-Commander or Windows-explorer itself. But most people still prefer to go to dos to navigate through directories and edit files by typing at the good old dos prompt than the fancy GUI interface. Now with the help of EasyJump you can quickly Jump through directory to directory and enter those weird file names at the dos prompt in a blink.

EasyJump is a small TSR (Terminate and stay resident) program, which means it stays in the memory. It takes up only about 880 bytes of your conventional memory so there's no reason why you shouldn't have this installed all the time. Programmed in Assembly for it's efficiency and it's compactness. This little dos enhancement program works by searching for files or Directory names based upon the input you type at the dos prompt. If there's a match, the file Or directory name will be displayed one line above from where your cursor is, thus giving you a chance to verify before you press enter to accept. The Searching order is done according to your directory listing. For instant, if you've your directory listing sorted by files first method, then a match would bring the matching file name first than the directory with the similar name, and vice versa if directories are placed first.

OPTIONS____________________________________________________________

EasyJump gives you three key options (F1, Tab, and Shift) keys. To get this help at the dos prompt, first change to the directory where the program resides and type in EasyJump (file name) followed by /?. Following is a short description of what each command does,

F1 key/Slash key '\':
Enters the matching name found automatically beginning at the current cursor position but does not press the Enter key to accept and to move the cursor to the next line, this option is very useful when you have to further Edit the command prompt line. Pressing the slash key does the same thing except it adds the slash character to the end of the command line, thus eliminating the need to press F1 followed by the slash if you wish to go deeper into the selected directory.

Tab key:
Cycles through a list of matching names in order of the directory listing as explained above. Pressing the Tab on the last one would bring you to the first matched name with a beep sound.

Shift+Enter:
Override the selection and to accept what ever you typed. Press the space bar to override and continue editing.

Note, EasyJump doesn't search for files by file extension. If your command line includes a period '.' or ends with a period, EasyJump assumes whatever text you enter following the period is the extension, thus, disabling itself for the current session. However, Monitoring will be reactivated as soon as you backspace on the period or edit it to match a file name.

Tip. Begin the command line with a space and select any executable file to run.

INSTALLATION_____________________________________________________

Installation is pretty simple, you can either load the program manually by typing EasyJump or what ever name you rename the COM file as, or have it run automatically every time you click on the dos prompt icon by editing it's properties. To dos this, right click on the DOS icon and select properties, and then the program button page. Edit the `batch file' edit box to point to the EasyJump program location on your hard disk and that's it. For example, if the file is location in your windows directory then, the input would be C:\WINDOWS\EASYJUMP.COM

REQUIREMENTS______________________________________________________

MS Windows/ MS Dos
Doskey.com should be installed, preferably in low memory.
