MailMaint - Readme File for Release 3.1 - 16th December 2001
============================================================

MailMaint for Windows is a simple POP3 Mailbox Maintenance application
that supports multiple POP3 mailboxes, allowing headers to be accessed,
messages to be read and deleted, and new email and replies to be sent.
Old headers are stored on the PC to minimise access time, but this
application is not designed as an offline mail reader. Whole messages
can be relayed to another mailbox, chosen from an address book.

MailMaint's main purpose is deleting messages that have become stuck in
the POP3 mailbox and are not being properly deleted by your normal email
application. This typically happens when the mail headers are corrupted
or deliberately wrong (very common with spam email). But MailMaint will
also be very useful for those that need to access multiple mailboxes.

MailMaint is dial-up networking (RAS) aware, will open a connection if
required, indicates which connection is being used, and will ensure it
is closed down when the program is exited.

While MailMaint is normally installed under Windows with all the
settings kept in the system registry, it is may also be run from a floppy
disk, with all server settings and preferences saved on the floppy. This
will be useful for people that travel a lot and need to access POP3 mail
in a better manner than a web interface.

MailMaint is shareware, developed by Magenta Systems Ltd, in the UK,
and supports all 32-bit versions of Windows. Until registered, it is
only possible to access two POP3 servers, and it's not possible to send
or reply to email. The unregistered copy still allows mail to be viewed
and deleted, similarly to earlier releases. Registration costs 10 (UKP,
including VAT), which is about US$15, with discounts for site licenses.

Installation
------------

MailMaint comprises a single program file MAILMAINT.EXE (about 539 Kbyte
in size, with no extra DLLs or other run time supporting files.
Installation will therefore not effect any other Windows
applications. No files will be installed in the Windows directory. The
only prerequisite is Windows 95, 98, ME, NT4, 2000 or XP with TCP/IP
networking installed, and Internet Explorer 4 or later.

MailMaint is usually distributed as a ZIP file which should first be
unzipped into a temporary folder. If you do not already have it, the
Winzip application from http://www.winzip.com/ (or from most magazine
cover CD-ROMs, Tucows archives, etc) is strongly recommended.

The program SETUP.EXE should then be run to install MailMaint. About
600 Kbytes of disk space is required for the software and some files
that will be created when mailboxes are accessed, but this can increase
depending on how many messages are left on the POP3 server.

If you have received an executable with a version number like
MAILMT30.EXE, this should be run just like SETUP.EXE to install the
software.

These are now in the help file.

Distribution
------------

MailMaint may be freely distributed via web pages, FTP sites, BBS and
conferencing systems or on CD-ROM in unaltered zip format, but no charge
may be made other than reasonable media or bandwidth cost. Any
notifications must state that MailMaint is shareware and copyrighted by
Magenta Systems Ltd. Please email Magenta Systems Ltd if you distribute
MailMaint in some way, so you can be notified of upgrades or other
important changes.

Registration
------------

To register MailMaint, please use the web form indexed from
http://www.magsys.co.uk/mailmaint/ or click Order Online from the Help
menu. It is necessary to enter the logon for one POP3 server account on
the order form, and this server must exist in MailMaint for the license
key to be accepted. The license key will be returned as a small file
that is simply copied into the MailMaint directory. When MailMaint
starts, it checks for the file and a valid server, and if one or other
is not found displays the text 'unregistered' and does not allow mail to
be sent or more than two POP3 servers to be accessed.
